Attempting to put a positive 'spin' on results which are just a tad shoddy is more of a job for a political advisor than for me. Penning last Thursday's result at Trefloyne stretched my imagination to the limit - so it is pleasing to report that things are looking up. On Tuesday, the seniors from Carmarthen journeyed to Tenby for our first meeting of the season, and it is difficult to imagine how the two teams could have had better conditions for the tournament - really warm sunshine with just enough breeze to prevent overheating. Our size XL captain, Allen Watts (right) - despite the pain from his very recently replaced hip - came to support his team and check up on his vice-captain. Using crutches, playing no golf and having his team massacred at Trefloyne - and Allen is still smiling! Stand-ins were the order of the day, as you will see from the photograph below of the leading fourball on the first tee, Tenby's vice-captain Bart Youll is subbing for Allen, while Carmarthen's vice-captain Peter Jones is appearing for their captain Mick Fenney. All 10 games proceeded without delay, the only hiccup being the 'no show' of veteran Roy Gundry, a case of suspected Senior Moment Syndrome. Not a problem for his erstwhile partner Des Stone, who bravely played a two versus one game very successfully. And so, to the nitty gritty - who beat who? I am thrilled to be able to confirm that this match actually was 'A damned close run thing', the scores being Carmarthen 5.5, Tenby 4.5 - a marked improvement! Our sights are now set on a victory at Newport Links on Thursday, July 3 - fingers crossed! M.F.
