What better way to celebrate Father's Day than to be welcomed back home with a hearty breakfast after playing 18 holes of golf on the championship course at Tenby Golf Club and helping a local charity on the way.

This is what 60 members of Tenby Golf Club enjoyed on Sunday when they tee'd off at 7 am in the annual Philip Booth Breakfast Scramble, the 15th consecutive playing of the competition.

The wet and miserable weather conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of the teams who were playing for the magnificent trophy provided by the sponsor and the scores reflected the quality of golf that was played over this old links course.

The winners on the day with a combined net score of 59.1 were Roger Schooling, David Schooling, Paul James and Viv James, who are pictured with the Philip Booth Cup.

In second place with a combined score of 59.3 were Chris Thompson, Gavin Field-Thomas, Matt Adams and Rob Hall.

Third place on the same score were Ian Thomas, David Blackmore, Mike Anthony and Steve Sutcliffe.

A magnificent full Welsh breakfast provided by Julie and Gareth was washed down with the now traditional black velvet drink, a fine start to Father's Day by anyone's standards.

The proceeds of the event will go to the restoration fund at St Issell's Church, Saundersfoot. A generous donation by the sponsor, Philip Booth, boosted the fund and many thanks must go to him for continuing to host the competition, an event in the calendar that all members look forward to.

Flaming June - for all the wrong reasons!

Where's the summer gone? Flaming June it was on Friday evening, but for all the wrong reasons! The wind was howling, it was cold, and the last groups in the Friendly Foursomes had rain to contend with as well. Flaming awful!

Amazingly, the players remembered the ethos of the Friendly Foursomes and it was a great social evening. Many had never played in them before as many of our ladies were playing in the league match over in Haverfordwest, so thanks to them for answering my call.

No twos were recorded, although I hear that there was very nearly a two on the par five 10th from David T. Morgan and Rita Collins. The three netted them five points...unbelievable!

Four people were happy to walk away with a bag draw of £4 each. They were Rita Collins, Alan Monday, Gavin Field-Thomas and Judy Brew.

In second place were David and Rita with 25 points over 14 holes. But first with 27 points were David Blackmore and Laura McQueen. Well done to them.

I must say a big thank you to chef Dave and barman Matt for looking after us so well when we came in. My pudding was to die for!

We still need men to sign up for the Sam Ackerman on Friday, June 28. It is on the computer, so please get your names down as soon as you can. The next Friendly Foursomes is on Friday, July 19, and the sign-up sheet for that will be on the back noticeboard.

Tenby were successful in their Ping match, so the next round is against Milford Haven at Newport Links on this Sunday, June 23. Good luck to the team.

13 - unlucky

for some!

Thursday, June 13 - not unlucky weather-wise for Tenby Seniors as they travelled to South Pembs, because the rain stayed away and the sun actually shone - but oh that wind! Blowing straight up the Haven, it was seldom less than two clubs strong, and on exposed fairways somewhat stronger.

Also not unlucky player-wise, because the two clubs have been competing in the summer league for many years and the 18 team members from Tenby were welcomed by the familiar South Pembs lads and the match was played in a very friendly and relaxed manner.

Why, then, was June 13 an unlucky day? Well after the nine games were completed and both teams had partaken of a splendid match meal, South Pembs Seniors captain Chris Clarkson revealed that Tenby had suffered an unlucky defeat by the narrowest of margins - seven games to two!

Finally, still on the theme of bad luck, we shall be without captain Tony for a few weeks, while he completes a course of treatment to eradicate a medical problem. Treasurer Allen Watts will assume the mantle of acting captain during his absence.

To a man, the seniors wish Tony success with his treatment and a speedy return to his duties when his health is fully restored.
