The end of the summer season has arrived, and as we move into autumn it is time to change the captain and committee, vote in any actions or policies, check out the finances and listen to a couple of speeches.
All in all, Tuesday, October 2, was a fairly busy day for the seniors, a 15-hole Stableford competition, a light lunch, an AGM and two charity presentations.
Starting with the competition, where 28 seniors started out in sunshine and ended in torrential rain and a gale of wind. Some 13 players abandoned the game, but 15 hardy golfers finished the 15 holes - looking like drowned rats, but trying to follow in the footsteps of our magnificent Ryder Cup team and WIN!
Jeff Banfield duly did, with a score of 29 points, which is really good over 15 holes in tough conditions - and he also made a rare birdie 2 on the 12th. Captain Jim, determined to end his year in a blaze of glory, was second with a commendable 26 points and Allen Watts, our size XXL Kiwi treasurer claimed third place with a respectable 24 points.
After drying off and sorting out wet gear, it was into the club for a drink and a really tasty bowl of cawl, with all the trimmings, from our new steward team of Gareth and Julie - welcome and thank you from the seniors.
This year's AGM was remarkably non-confrontational. Captain Jim thanked the members of his committee for their help over the year, expressed the pleasure that he derived from leading such a fine bunch of chaps and congratulated individual seniors on their success in various competitions. He then handed over the reins to the incoming captain, Mr. Anthony Morgan, along with the much sought after captain's tie.
Both Jim and Tony posed for the traditional photograph, and then the new captain introduced his new committee, consisting of vice-captain Nigel Rimell, returning treasurer Allen Watts, and very sadly, secretary - nobody at all for the moment! Tony asks that if any interested, willing and available senior would like to volunteer for the post, would he please contact him as soon as possible.
Golf, lunch and business completed, it was time to make two donations to two deserving local charities. As I am sure you are by now well aware, our charity organiser, Mr. Brian Morgan, devotes a great deal of time and energy extracting cash from the section - and visiting teams - by way of raffles, contributions, extortion and possibly even embezzlement! His efforts have enabled the seniors to donate £1,587.73 to seven different charities in 2012 - well done 'Morgy'.
The first charity on Tuesday's agenda was the very worthwhile Harriet Davis Trust, set up by the caring and benevolent parents of Harriet. The trust is a well established local charity which owns some properties in the Tenby and Narberth area, specifically to provide holidays for disabled children. If this charity strikes a chord with you, as it did with the seniors, you can find out more at http://www.harriet-davis-trust.org.uk">www.harriet-davis-trust.org.uk. The photograph shows Mr. and Mrs. Davis being presented with a cheque for £300 by past-captain Jim, and Brian Morgan.
Finally, the second charity chosen by Brian and the committee; Talking Newspapers. This is a service for the blind and partially sighted, provided by a body of volunteers who record newspapers onto CDs. This is a time consuming labour of love, and the cost of CDs and distribution is met solely by charitable donations. The seniors' donation was accepted by the very familiar figure of Bob Storey, some time club captain and later seniors captain, who is seen in the photograph accepting a cheque for £287.73. Bob gave us a brief word picture of the charity's aims and the activities of the volunteers involved. If you feel moved to offer your services to this very worthwhile charity, you should contact Bob.
And there we have it; four events done and dusted. We can now look forward to the first winter eclectic on Tuesday, October 9 - and then - the first Chicken Trot of the 2012/2013 season on Friday, October 12! Deep Joy.
See you there!

New Knockout Cup for Saturday Swingers . . .
Tenby Golf Club's Saturday Swingers will compete for a fourth trophy during 2012/2013. It is a knockout competition, albeit the format will be Stableford scoring as usual and not matchplay. The new trophy will be named once the deal with the sponsor has been finalised.
The initial stage will be played in eight pools, each containing seven Swingers. Each Swinger's best weekly score during the month of October will be added to his best in November and best in December.
The two Swingers with the highest three-round totals from each pool will go forward to the knockout stages in the New Year. The final will take place on Swingers' Day in the summer of 2013.
