Last Sunday saw the playing of the Argent Cup, where a draw for partners is made between a junior and adult, in foursomes stableford competition. With the handicap allowance being half combined, and rounded up to the next whole shot, this provided for a close scrutinisation when the cards were handed in.

After the draw was made on the morning, there were quite a few happy pairings fancying their chances, either because they had lots of shots, or that their partner was a single figure golfer.

With the majority of pairings electing for the junior to hit the first tee shot off the odd holes, this proved to be a good strategy, although the reload boys who decided to go first shall remain nameless! Fancy making a young junior tee off the white boxes.

With a brisk wind making the front nine tough, it would be the back nine where the scoring could be made up, as was to be the case.

Winners on the day with a very creditable 36 points were Angus James and Mike Anthony. Second place went to Richard Dwyer and Neil Lovatt on 35 points and in third place were Ryan Dennehy and Robin Bradbury.

The honour of presenting the trophy went to Anita Davies, who has worked tirelessly for the junior section throughout the year, and the joy on Angus and Mike's faces is evident.

Early start for Seniors

How very nice to be back from holiday and to rejoin the Seniors for the return match against Cardigan. I would just like to offer my personal thanks to Frau Merkel, because during our stay in Europe the Pound Sterling to Euro exchange rate meant that we were buying petrol at 99p per litre! - George Osborne please take note!

Tuesday, August 28, was blessed with that very rare condition this year - sunshine! - which was appreciated by both our visitors and ourselves. Shirts replaced waterproofs and those with brown legs wore shorts - not always a pretty sight! This week the normal 13.00 start time was brought forward to 10.45, which proved to be successful and popular; everybody arrived home at a reasonable time.

The photograph shows the team captains, our own captain Jim and Cardigan's Nigel Clarke on the first tee, competing in the first of 10 matches. Cardigan were looking for revenge after losing to Tenby six games to four on their own turf in May. Tenby had a couple of secret weapons in new team members Steve Sutcliffe and Nic Rogers, and so 40 happy golfers made their way around the excellently prepared links.

Later, when all the matches were completed and the players were showered, changed and congregated in the clubhouse, the super efficient Neave easily coped with the clamour of thirsty golfers at the bar, before we all moved to the dining room to savour the delights of the lovely Natalie's cooking.

Plates empty and appetites satisfied, it was time to discover the winners in the Brian Morgan organised charity raffle.

Both teams shared the prizes pretty well equally, and the proceeds were added to the charity fund for distribution later in the year.

Next, the room fell silent and the atmosphere tingled with anticipation as both captains stood to address the players. Pleasantries were exchanged, hilariously funny jokes were recounted and then the all important result was announced by Nigel - Tenby 9.5, Cardigan .5 - yes!

Our next match is to be played on Thursday, September 6, against Haverfordwest, at home. Captain Jim is looking for players for this event, so do register your name on Master Scoreboard on the list in the men's locker room. Who knows? We may even play in sunshine again...

See you there

Ladies' Section

Apparently August is always wet and this year we have given up expecting anything else, so many competitions usually played in the summer have been cancelled or postponed.

Towards the end of July the fourth Hill-Lowe Bogey was eventually played and Gillian Roberts produced the best score of +1, with Pam Cole all-square, Maura Rimell -2 and Sandra Parker -3.

The last competition in July was played on one of our five days and the scores in a Stableford reflected this - i.e. Sarah Waring 41 points, Gill John and Anne Wilks 38 and Anita Davies 37.

Captain's Day was played at the beginning of August and the following week the competition was for the Charnwait Trophy. This is played as a Texas Scramble with almost higher maths needed to produce a result. This year the trophy, always sponsored by Betty Charnock and Ruth Goldwait, was won by Maura Rimell, Judy Lewis and Sophie Lovatt on 69.7. Runners-up were Veronica Martin, Nesta Hart and Anita Davies on 71.2, while Barbara Morris, Heather Morgan and Isabel Kent were third on 71.9.

The following week the course was closed for the girls' British Open Amateur Championship and then on August 23 a memorable day occurred, it was dry, warm and there was no wind, hence the very good scores returned in the fifth Hill-Lowe Bogey.

Annette Flower had spent some time the previous week spotting for the girls championship and Pat Fox had been on a practice range with her grandson, Philip, so if you want to improve your game watch the young.

Results: Annette Flower and Pat Fox +6; Gill John +5 and Laura McQueen all-square.

League matches have continued in recent weeks and the team won against Newport and halved with Carmarthen so they they have high hopes of finishing near the top of the league.

This is the time of year for open meetings and Tenby members are great supporters of these. At Ashburnham, Sarah Waring, Georgina Ormond and Laura McQueen won the event. At the Gower, Toni Lucas, Isabel Kent and Maura Rimell were second. At Haverfordwest, Julie Lovett was second and Pat Fox third in their division and Pat also won the Clareston Trophy - the Tenby Past Captains Trophy with 35 points, from Heather Morgan on 31.

The skill exhibited by the 13-18 year-old girls from 18 countries - China, India, America and much of Europe, in often very difficult conditions surprised many members. These girls were a credit to their teachers, families and countries and showed the value of dedicated practise.

May I thank the staff and all the members who helped on the course in often awful weather and in the clubhouse to make the LGU international event for the girls British Open Championship so successful.
