Thursday, May 10, dawned overcast, windy and cold - but the seniors were not daunted by the conditions and by 12.30, the clubhouse was filled with Tenby and Milford Haven veterans, all ready to get out on the links to do battle. Unfortunately, captain Jim was not sufficiently recovered to lead his team out, but he was able to pop in and wish everyone the best of luck before the contest.

Our secretary Jeff Banfield stepped into the breach as acting captain, and he and his partner Ken Goldsbrough were the first team out. Sadly, the visitors' captain, Robert Graham, who should have played in this four ball, was a little late and missed this tee time, but a swift re-shuffle sorted out this minor problem out and play commenced at one o'clock sharp.

Sheltering from the wind around the first tee, the remaining seven four balls - all well wrapped up in waterproofs - awaited their turn to perform their (hopefully) long and straight first drive off the match. Some actually did! -and quite soon all the contestants were out on the course and enjoying the match.

Luckiest man of the day? Mike Fox being given an unexpected display of support from his 'groupies' in the Ladies' Section as he and Peter Williams started their game.

Happiest man of the day? Brian 'Raffles' Morgan, who after a disappointing performance last week, played more like his old self this week - even scoring a delightful two from the sand on the 17th hole.

After a very tasty post-match steak and the odd glass of medicinal alcohol, Jeff Banfield finally met up with Robert Graham, and they addressed the assembled teams, both agreeing that it had been a very good match, played in good spirits and enjoyed by all. After both gentlemen delighted their audience with absolutely hilarious funny stories, the Milford Haven team made their farewells and left for the short drive home.

Oh, yes - the result - a very close run thing, Tenby 8 - Milford Haven 0!

Which leads me to have a brief look at the seniors' performance thus far this year. Now I am well aware that there are lies, damned lies and statistics - but the following figures are strictly factual:

Matches played - eight; won - six, lost - two (75 per cent successful).

Games played - 76; won - 52.5; lost - 23.5 (69 per cent successful).

Let us hope we can keep this success rate rolling when we play away at Machynys next Thursday.

See you there!

Ladies' Section

It will not surprise anyone that several Thursday competitions have been postponed recently because of inclement weather.

Spring is the time for qualifying rounds for external competitions. The Challenge Bowl's round was played at the beginning of April and resulted in Anita Davies qualifying in the Silver division and Isabel Kent in the Bronze. The runners-up were Pam Cole and Georgina Ormond, respectively.

The Australian Spoons qualifiers were Laura McQueen and Penny Cope with a very good score of 47 points, followed by Pam Cole and Pat Fox on 41.

We wish Anita, Isabel, Laura and Penny successful rounds when they represent Tenby in Welsh Finals later in the year.

The Saturday April Medal was won by Sarah Waring on nett 71, with Georgina Ormond on 76.

Similar scores were recorded on the following Thursday, i.e. Irene Gilman on nett 76, followed by Heather Morgan and Denise Edwards, both on nett 77.

The weather for the second Hill-Lowe Bogey 2012 was more encouraging and Ann Wilks was delighted with her +4 score, as were Sarah Waring and Georgina Ormond on +2 and Pat Fox on +1.

The Coronation Foursomes and a Jubilee Threes round were both postponed, but the Saturday GUW May Medal was played early this month because of fixture clashes and the leading scores were by Sarah Waring and Penny Cope.

Away from the weekly competitions, various teams and individuals have been busy. Beginning with the less successful effort, sadly the Mail on Sunday team lost away to Pontardawe by 3.5 to 1.5 and also away the County League team lost to Ashburnham by three matches to two.

However, there are successes to record and commend. Ruth Goldwait and Isabel Kent won their Daily Mail Foursomes match, at Tenby, against Ann Dassen and Julie Jenkins by 2 and 1. Bethan Morris has continued to play well and has maintained the standard of some of her predecessors by winning the Dyfed Schools Championship Trophy with an excellent score.

We are delighted for Ruth, Isabel and Bethan and wish them continued success later in the season.

Damp squib!

Miserable wet weather conditions last week meant that the Mid-Week Stableford competition was something of a damp squib.

Played off the yellow boxes, only 10 cards were taken out and leading scores and prize winners were: 1. David T. Morgan 38 pts (£11); 2. John Ross 35 (£6.50); 3. Arthur Thomas 31 (£4.50).

Bag draw: Arthur Thomas and John Ross (£4.50 each).

Pro Shop draw: Gavin Greenhorn (sleeve of Pro Vi balls).

Twos: There were no twos, so the money will rollover to the next midweek competition on Wednesday, May 23.

Handicap changes: David T. Morgan 24 to 23; Robert Parsons 14 to 15.
