Local neighbours Tenby Golf Club and Trefloyne Golf Club were drawn together in the first round of the Dyfed Golfing Union's Jeff Harries Bowl. The match was played at Tenby last Thursday evening in wintery conditions, although it did not actually rain during play. Trefloyne beat Tenby twice in the league last year and are currently doing well in Division Two following promotion. In the top game, Dan Cope and Darren Thomas ran out five and four winners against Gavin Scotcher and John Broomhead who were both members at Tenby for many years. Thomas's putter was hot. Chris Thompson and Terry Davies had the narrowest of wins on the last green against up-an-coming Billy Truman and his partner Grant Hardy who had a wonderful round at Trefloyne on the previous Saturday. The format of the Jeff Harries Bowl is the difficult Greensome Foursomes and the rules state that all games must be completed, ie there are to be no halves. Andrew Cope and Lewis Hurlow were behind for most of their game against Simon Arthur and Simon Sweet, but levelled on the 18th. On the 19th, Cope and Sweet both hit second shots into Black Rock, but Hurlow then knocked a four iron to about six-feet to clinch the tie. Experienced home pair of Steve Sutcliffe and Loz Phillips enjoyed a great battle against Adam Thomas and youngster Frazer Findlay eventually triumphing one up. Neil Thomas and Nicky Allen found the power play of the Cope brothers, Nicky and Richard, a little too much to handle and eventually succumbed by three and two. The steady play of Gary McNeilly and John Stenson proved decisive against young George Taylor and Trefloyne club captain Nick Garrod as they claimed victory by two and one. Luckily for Tenby, the last rubber was not fundamental to the match result. Nothing went right on the night for Neil Webb and Phil Goodridge who went down by seven and six to the two James', Couzens and Criddle. Thus Tenby won the tie by five games to two, but the match was much closer than the score suggests. Three of the seven games went to the last hole or beyond. In the second round, Tenby have another home fixture against the winners of Glynhir and Cardigan.
