As the previous report dealt with our successful Annual Angling Festival, this week's catches up with a number of recent matches. The race for the finishing line in the club's various championships is very firmly on! (writes N.A.)

September 25, Mid Week Match: A balmy (barmy?) evening greeted us all back at our normal booking-in station for the late September mid-week match. Replete with new scales (thanks to Lewis Brann), 12 anglers entered the restarted mid-week series. Lydstep, Hobbs, Harbour Walls, Old Pier and other 'secret' venues were targeted to continue the charge towards the club's target of 1000lbs of fish this year.

Nice to see Dan Thomas out for a go, Henry Probert back again and new member Chris Watkins adding their talents to the usual crew. Conger, Thornback, LSD (of course!), Tub Gurnards and another Vivaporous Blenney were weighed in. The conger and thonrnie were returned immediately after capture. Dan's conger was enough for the victory and Nev's thornie formed part of his second placed bag.

With Totter in charge of proceedings, the final tally was another 19kg on the charts, with individual results being - 1. Dan Thomas, Conger, 4.010kg; 2. Nev Andrews, Bag, 3.524kg; 3. Stuart Allen, LSD 0.942kg.

September 29, Beach Match: Another nice little match at Pendine, with 13 anglers booking in for the lunchtime contest, over high water for a change. A super surf was coming in and, as usual at Pendine, hopes were high. After negotiating a clear route through the motocross riders and spectators, the competitors spread out between two and nearly four miles up the beach.

The previous week's HAG open suggested that flounders might be hard to come by and that again proved to be the case. Quite a few small bass were reported, but at the weigh-in two just made the mark for Nev and Ben. In the middle, Steve Cook found three nice flounders to take the bag, with Garfield, Matt, Bob and Dyfrig also weighing-in.

Results were - 1. Nev, Bass 1.018kg; 2. Steve, Bag, 1.576 kg; 3. Ben, Bass 0.928kg.

And many thanks to John Nic for his first foray into match stewardship.

October 9, Mid Week Match: Eleven anglers booked in hoping for a good 'hit' in between the run of unsettled weather systems. After coughing the dosh, they scattered to the usual Lydstep, Stackpole, Saundersfoot and Amroth venues in search of the 'big one' and more club points.

Approaching 'squeaky bum' time in the Mid Week Championship in particular and three of the four main contenders showed signs of nerves and blanked (Pugs, Totter and Nev). Stuart, however, employed nerveless tactics to take the bag and 10 points.

It wasn't enough for the victory as Lewis and Dan did their impression of mountain (not mounting!) goats which saw Lewis land a very nice conger of 2.485kg. Dan snaffled a lovely pouting/poor cod which has subsequently been accepted by the committee as a poor cod and therefore a new club record at a mammoth 0.212kg!

Results were - 1. Lewis Brann, Conger 2.485kg; 2. Stuart Allen, Bag 1.352kg; 3. Joe Protheroe, LSD 0.882kg.

November 3, Beach Match, Lydstep Cup: The day before was horrible with high winds and torrential downpours... the day in question was... horrible with increasing winds, increasing wind chill and torrential rain. Thirteen anglers, including a new member, booked in to try and win the Lydstep Cup and after the previous day's winds, we were hopeful of a good match.

Lydstep has not been kind to us fish wise in recent years and regrettably, the weigh-in proved it still didn't like us! A few, mainly small dogs, were landed and eventually Steve Cook tweaked two out and Barry the one. Although the entry warranted three prizes, just the two were awarded to the lucky lads!

1. Steve Cook, LSD 0.664kg, winning the Lydstep Cup; 2. Barry Taylor, LSD 0.408kg.

Our next match is on November 17, at Amroth, and is against Clevedon Pier SAC. All members please make the effort to be there to greet our friends. The club will be providing a late lunch for all competitors in the New Inn, Amroth, after the fishing, which is between 11 am and 3 pm. Please let Nev know via the usual channels if you intend to fish and eat for numbers purposes!
