At last the warmer weather seems to be putting in an appearance and we now need the piscatorial friends to catch up with their usual cycles. Reports of good Pollack, stacks of Bull Huss, occasional Smooth Hounds and Bass are now beginning to filter in. Mackerel are here, but very, very patchy and need a lot of effort to track them down in any numbers.
The club has been its usual active self with an 'away day', rover and mid-week match all to report on in this week's update. A very successful charter boat fishing trip was organised for just after the bank holiday, so keep your eye out in the Observer and on internet based media for further events!
May 19, Beach Match, Clevedon Pier: Twelve anglers made the trip for the additional match with Clevedon Pier SAC. The match did not count towards the annual inter-club Dave Graham Memorial Trophy, but was a welcome opportunity to fish a different venue and have a day out. After a superb breakfast in Scarlett's café overlooking the pier, a lot more fish were seen at this venue than has been the case. But as usual, most went to the hosts and the target species, Thornbacks, did not make an appearance unfortunately! However, the club salutes its two successful anglers, Mark Goodall and Garfield Thomas for sparing the club's blushes in avoiding a blank! The rest of us just enjoyed the tanning weather, good company and merciless banter. Thanks to Clevedon Pier SAC for fitting us in. It was much appreciated.
The results for club points were - 1. Mark Goodall, LSD 0.517g; 2. Garfield Thomas, LSD 0.467kg.
May 26, Roving Match: Twelve anglers booked in on the latest roving match of eight hours, enabling most of the normal rock marks to come within reach for a full day's fishing. The weather had just started to pick up a little, but the returns at the end suggest we still need some further warmth to fully start summer off. Nevertheless, in amongst the usual LSD, mackerel, wrasse captures, Mark Turner landed and returned a smashing Bull Huss of 3.740kg, no mean feat in bright sunlight and calm seas! Well done. Totter and Beefy Richards ran out eventual winners with their combined bag of 4.605kg, with Mark T taking maximum points for the championships with his Huss.
Results - 1. Totter Taylor and Beefy Richards, 4.605kg; 2. John Loring and Lewis Brann, 4.331kg; 3. Mark Turner and Phil James, 3.740kg.
May 29, Mid Week: Fourteen anglers, including our junior Kieran, booked in at Penally for the recent Mid-Week match. With the light nights and the improving weather, the competitors again had the full range of options available to them in their search for angling accolades! Lydstep, Stackpole, Tenby Bandstand, Broadhaven and Giltar were the venues chosen. LSD, grey gurnards and a solitary dab were found and all bar one angler weighed in.
The Brothers Pro now seem to be starting a bit of a charge toward a number of club championships, taking first and second on this occasion. Joe even had the temerity to 'borrow' bait off Totter and then proceeded to catch a cracking LSD and take the first prize. The cheek of it! Well done also to Kieran Allen for weighing in and receiving the junior prize.
Results were - 1. Joe Protheroe, LSD 1.090kg; 2. Pugso Protheroe, bag, 2.340kg; 3. Nev Andrews, LSD 0.750kg.
Thanks to Joe for returning the LSD alive to the water. Note to Nev, get new batteries for the scales!
Shore Fish of the Month went to Joe Protheroe for his LSD of 1.090kg, 81.6 per cent. Adam Roberts took the Boat Fish of the Month award for his Bull Huss of 4.819kg, 62.5 per cent. Adam was pushed very hard for the boat fishing monthly award by Beefy Richards, who also landed a nice Huss of 4.56kg.
Our next match is back on Pendine Beach, fishing from 2 to 6 pm. Please be at the booking-in prompt by 1.15 if you want to access the beach.
Any further information at any time from Nev on 07500 417737 or via the usual internet based methods.
