We are fishing hard still, but the returns have been generally slow (writes N.A.). Two excellent fish to report on, however, including a smashing Spur Dog caught during the Mid Week match on February 13 by Joe Pro.

January 24, Pendine Vice Presidents' Trophy: Yet another howling gale brought trepidation to the anglers on the morning of our latest hoped for jolly to Pendine. We gathered on the slip and 'uhmed' and 'aahed', the cud was chewed, the chins were rubbed and the consensus was 'nah', Saundersfoot for us! Lovely surf at Saundersfoot, but no blasted fish! Julian, John and Totter did manage to weigh-in, so the Vice Presidents' Trophy went to Julian with a flounder.

Results were - 1. Julian Davies, Flounder 0.585 kg; 2. Peter (Maddies) Taylor, Flounder 0.517 kg; 3. John (Razor) Nicholas, Flounder 0.415 kg.

February 3, Clevedon Inter Pier England: To the strains of 'Bread of Heaven', 11 members mounted their steeds, gathered up their leeks and sped towards the second Severn crossing to do battle with the Clevedonites.

This was the second leg of our annual two-legged series and we took a Swansea-like advantage into the second leg nearer to Wembley. Like Swansea, our cunning plan was to soak up the pressure, avoid scoring (??!) and defend deep to prevent Clevedon from prosecuting their home advantage.

What a result! Just one fish caught all day and none by the Tenbyites! We were victorious by 1.013kg over two legs and after a little discussion around the location of the Dave Graham Memorial Trophy, it was proudly carried back to Cymru to the strains of 'I'm forever blowing bubbles!'

Well done the lads and lasses on a memorable performance and incoming chairman Bob collected the Graham Memorial Trophy from Terry Varley, of Clevedon, after the excellent post-match meal.

On the way back, though, the 'flying hearse', owned by El Presidente Roy Edge, was pulled over and he was invited to discuss his driving speed by our law guardians. He accepted his punishment like the pillar of the community (pillar boys, pillar!) and Mickey and Diane continued their journey home with Roy to the strains of 'Rhinestone (Six Points) Cowboy'!

February 10, Rover: Another difficult day was in prospect with few fish showing and a wind which always seems to be from the wrong direction lately. We're just ticking over now until the temperatures start to rise and the Spring species arrive (we hope!).

Even having the opportunity to fish anywhere didn't really help and just some dabs, flounders, whiting and, thanks to Totter, a couple of dogs were weighed in. John Nic pouched a nice dab, however, of 0.383g.

Results were - 1. Peter (Canicula) Taylor and Nev Andrews 1.361 kg; 2. John Nicholas and Julian Davies, 1.031 kg; 3. John Loring and Paul Goodwin, 0.203 kg.

February 13, Mid Week Match: The anglers continue to gather with great enthusiasm for the Mid Week matches and welcome the opportunity to avoid soap operas and ironing on a regular basis. The forecast for this match was dead dodgy and the only question seemed to be how wet would we get, not how much fish would we 'bish'!

A variety of venues were visited (some deep, some shallow) and the evening continued fairly quietly. But then... things picked up and some Spur Dogs were contacted and to his great credit, one was landed by Joe Pro at a stunning 4.36kg!

After that, a couple of the smaller fish, like dabs and pout, were recorded, but the night belonged to JP. Needless to say he took first place and had some dabs to go with his Spur. The Spur was weighed, photographed, witnessed and returned immediately.

Results were - 1. Joe Protheroe, Spur 4.36 kg; 2. Stuart Allen, bag, 0.331 kg; 3rd Gareth Protheroe, Dab 0.236 kg.

February 16, Annual Prize Giving Dinner: An excellent turnout of anglers, family, friends and sponsors gathered at the Ex Servicemen's Club for the Annual Prize Giving Dinner. A brilliant night was had by all and incoming chairman Bob and family had again done a marvellous job on preparing the trophies.

Wayne and staff had prepared leek and potato soup followed by roast beef and a choice of sweets for us to enjoy and enjoy we did!

After a few sherberts and the obligatory speeches, the trophies were handed out, with the principal winners being Barry Taylor, Senior Champion; Diane Northcoate, Ladies' Champion; and Don Price, winner of the prestigious Rembrandt Heaviest Fish Trophy and Warlow Bass Shield.

Congratulations to all the other anglers who picked up their share too!

Again our thanks must go to Wayne, Tosh and staff at the club for a fine spread and convivial surroundings, El Presidente for his 'presiding' (we all wish Liz a speedy recovery) and all who turned up to make the evening such a happy success.

At the close, Karl, our outgoing chairman, handed the badge of office to Bob under the watchful eye of Roy. Thanks must go to Karl, too, for the last three years' chairmanship.

February 17, Beach Rover: After the euphoria of JP's Spur the previous week, which was followed by a nice shore caught Bull Huss of 3.32kg by Barry Taylor the day after the Spur was caught, we returned to earth with a bit of a squidge.

Although there was a good turnout, concerns were that the wind had turned into the east south east and whilst there was a good surf up, would this be enough to encourage the fish?

Not on this occasion, unfortunately. But never mind, we keep smiling and we'll be at it again next Sunday at Llanstephan!

Results were - 1. Julian Davies, Flounder, 0.494kg; 2. Peter Taylor, Flounder, 0.350 kg; 3. Barry Taylor, Whiting, 0.276 kg.

Could all anglers please keep an eye out for reports here in the Observer or elsewhere as there are major works going on at Pendine which may interfere with our plans in the short term.
