With one match still to be fished this month, January has been very busy already, with two Mid Weeks, one Rover and one Beach Match to report on this week. We also welcome 10 new members to the club for 2013 and hope you all enjoy your fishing with us. Any questions or queries, just ask anyone at any time!

January 3, Mid Week: A very cheerful 14 anglers booked in to start the competition year with a bang! And for once, the optimism was not misplaced, with a cracking match turning up five different species and 11 of the competitors weighing in 12.5 kg of fish. LSD, whiting, fivebearded rockling, dabs and pouting were snaffled, with most fishing being caught locally in Tenby or Saundersfoot.

At the weigh-in, it was also nice to see a junior leading the way with a cracking LSD, also Mike Dixon (a nearly junior) bagging up and a new member John Loring, getting good points.

Results were - 1. Kieran Allen, junior, LSD 1.014kg; 2. Mike Dixon, bag 2.742kg; 3. John Loring, LSD 0.951kg.

January 6, Haven Rover: An early start for the eight entrants wasn't helped by a nagging southerly wind which had ice in it and was heralding the subsequent cold snap. At the booking in at Hobbs, some pleasure anglers were already in situ, no doubt chasing the recently reported good catches of cod from the point. As a result, the members scattered a little to different parts of the Haven in search of anything to get the rods rattling and keep warm.

It was generally quiet, which wasn't a great surprise, given the small tide and the fact that the match was all in daylight. The Brothers Pro snuck back from their first venue and managed to slip into the pole position on the Point part way through the match. This proved an inspired move (and why we have rovers of course), with them eventually weighing in LSD, whiting and poor cod between them to take the spoils.

Results were - 1. Joe and Gareth Protheroe, 2.268kg; 2. Barry Taylor and Nev Andrews, 0.570kg.

January 13, Roach Memorial South Beach: Thirteen anglers competed for the prestigious Roach Memorial Trophy in honour of our past chairman Norman. It proved to be a better day than forecast (thanks Norm!), with a gentle surf and breeze and dry conditions.

Hard going would describe the fishing, though, with the anglers trying from under their feet to way out in the distance (Steve!) in search of a piscatorial capture. In the end, Julian found a flounder (as he does!) and Totter and Nev winkled out dabs. At least the Memorial Trophy was won and we went home dry!

Results were - 1. Julian Davies, flounder 0.437kg; 2. Peter Taylor, dab 0.201kg; 3. Nev Andrews, dab 0.112kg.

January 17, Mid Week: Another good turnout for the latest Mid Week despite the onset of the cold snap and forecast snow for the following day. There was huge uncertainty over how the match would go fish-wise, however.

Saundersfoot and Tenby harbours, the Old Pier steps, Milford Haven and East Llanion were on the travel itinerary, together with full flasks and spades in the event that the white stuff started!

All the anglers managed to return safely, but only four had managed to find fish, with four species weighed in. 'New' member Royimir Ivanedgeovic [photo attached] squeaked a nice LSD to take the spoils and poor cod, flounder and five-bearded rockling were also brought to the scales.

Results were - 1. Roy 'Dead Cat on my Head' Edge, LSD 0.973kg; 2. Gareth Protheroe, LSD 0.538kg; 3. Adam Roberts, flounder 0.346kg.

The next match is at Pendine on January 27, weather and firing permitting. Lines in 12 noon and lines out 4 pm. If you want to go up the beach, then be at the booking-in no later than 11.30 am.

After that, we are trooping over the bridge to Clevedon for the return leg of our annual joust with Clevedon Pier SAC on February 3. So far, we have 15 expressions of interest and anyone else who would like to go please let Nev know.
