A very busy and successful period for the club recently to report on and also a very generous donation has been received in memory of our dear friend, the late Idris Williams.

October 18, Mid Week: Nine anglers entered the latest of the mid-week series, with things very much hotting up for the title of Mid Week Maestro! The usual local venues were chosen in search of the 'elusive' dogfish and other species with the anglers spread out from Saundersfoot to Stackpole.

A pleasant evening all round, with the 'elusive' dogs proving anything but for most anglers, and Garfield also nailed a couple of early season dabs. Everyone weighed-in, including Diane, who registered her first fish with the club. Well done Diane (they don't bite honest) and the victory eventually went to Mike Dixon. Mike is not normally very expressive, but was certainly pleased with his cash haul at the end of the evening and rightly so!

Results were - 1. Mike Dixon, LSD 0.782kg; 2. Garfield Thomas, bag 1.768kg; 3. Marc Workman, LSD 0.754kg.

October 21, Beach Rover: Eight anglers registered for the October beach rover and discussions at the start suggested a split in venue choice between Pendine and Coppet Hall. Good conditions were promised at both beaches and with darkness as well, there was every chance of a few fish.

During the event, reports from Pendine were very quiet (i.e. none), so it was with great interest that the chaps gathered back at Kilgetty for the weigh-in. Whisper it, but winter might just be arriving if the species recorded were any indication to go by, with whiting, dabs, dogs and flounder all weighed-in.

Strangely, though, all the fish came from Coppet, with Pendine considered to have failed us yet again.

Results were - 1. Nev Andrews, LSD 0.537kg; 2. Barry Taylor, LSD 0.411kg; 3. Mike Dixon, Dab 0.237kg.

October 25: In the period leading up to the club's annual festival, we were contacted by Mr. Bernard Shaw from Lancashire, who used to fish with a departed club stalwart of ours, Idris Williams. He kindly offered two trophies to the club to be presented in Idris's memory.

Club chairman Karl Boyle, vice-chair Bob Willing and secretary Garfield Thomas met Bernie in Tenby on the Thursday before the festival and were delighted to receive the trophies from him. At the subsequent committee meeting, it was agreed that one trophy would become the Idris Williams Pendine Trophy and the other would be the Idris Williams Freshwater East Trophy. Both would be awarded on the basis of the best aggregate registered at the respective venues over the course of the year, with the best six scores from Pendine to count.

October 28, Open Festival: The club's annual Open Festival took place on October 28, with fishing this year on Saundersfoot and Tenby South beaches. Some 88 anglers took the plunge and gave the match their best shot in the hope of winning the £600 main prize or one of the other very significant cash prizes. With a general absence of surf, it was a bit of a lucky dip in terms of the catch expectations and we were pleasantly surprised with the variety of the catch, even if the volume was a little low due to the calm conditions.

Dogfish, Flounders, Golden Grey Mullet, Tub Gurnard, Grey Gurnard and Dabs were weighed in by the 19 anglers who brought fish to the scales. Stephen Morris, with a dog of 0.896kg, took the first prize of £600, second and £200 went to Tony O'Neil with a dog of 0.872kg, third and £125 went to Tom Watkins with a dog of 0.808kg, heaviest flat went to Adam Roberts with a flounder of 0.712kg, who scooped £200.

The club is very grateful to John and Lesley Nicholas for their kind sponsorship, the Ex-Servicemen's Club for providing HQ facilities as ever, West Wales Angling, Pembrokeshire Tackle Terminal and Angler's Corner for their pre-booking facilities and donations and all members of the committee for their time and donations.

And, of course, our gratitude goes to the anglers who supported us with their entries and those that stewarded the event with us. The scales closed at 3.45 and the event was concluded, raffle and all by 4.30. Well done committee, yet another success!

November 4, Pendine Beach Match: This match was cancelled due to the extreme weather on the day which brought chaos to Pendine and presented unreasonably harsh conditions at Coppet Hall when we tried to relocate there. There's always another day!

November 8, Mid Week Match: Eight anglers registered for the November mid week match which unusually, was over low water. A calm evening shouldn't have presented a problem fish wise, but only the two anglers who gained access to Coppet Hall managed to find any fish.

The results helped Roy Edge close right up on the Mid Week Maestro battle. With one match to go, just three points separate Barry, Nev and Roy. Exciting stuff!

Anyhow the results were - 1. Roy Edge, LSD 0.791kg; 2. Mickey Bowles, bag 1.244kg.

November 11, Inter Club v Clevedon Pier SAC: Remembrance Sunday saw the club fish its traditional inter-club match with our friends from Clevedon Pier SAC. The commencement of construction work at Coppet Hall required a late venue change and, after some brief discussions, Amroth was next up, offering the chance of a few flats, dogs and reasonable access for all ages. The venue went down very well and next year's match is already scheduled to take place there.

Clevedon brought 19 fishing members and Tenby pitched up a very creditable 14, given that a couple of members were 'hors de combat' or on holiday in Morecambe (!??) of all places!

Again conditions were a little calm, but it was pleasing to see a few flats coming to the scales and we have certainly had worse matches against Clevedon, catch wise. Flounders and dabs were weighed-in, with the four prizes being split 50-50 between Tenby and the visitors.

Results were - 1. G. Silver, Clevedon, Flounder 0.486kg; 2nd John Nicholas, Tenby, bag, 0.678kg; 3. Julian Davies, Tenby, Flounder, 0.460kg; 4. S. Whitcombe, Clevedon, Flounder, 0.437kg.

The overall weights after the first leg of the Dave Graham Memorial Trophy were Tenby 2.781kg and Clevedon 1.541kg. A useful lead for Tenby to take up to Clevedon for the second leg which takes place on February 3 next year.

After the match, the anglers retreated to the Ex-Servicemen's Club where Wayne and the staff provided an excellent Sunday lunch to refortify the rumble tums and plan for the next time we 'cross swords'. Very civilised all round and as always a pleasure to welcome our English friends.

Next match: The next match is a day- night match on North Beach this Sunday, November 18. Fishing will be from 4 to 8 pm. The match list for next year has also been completed and will be available from matches in December in hard copy or to download from the club's website. A link is also available on the club's Facebook page.
