With the Tivyside Point to Point starting off the 2013 season for West Wales Area, the sun shone for the afternoon, with racegoers enjoying the last meeting to be held at the course of Cilwendeg.

The Tivyside Hunt are very grateful to the Bowen family for being their kind hosts since 2002 and no one knows the course better than clerk of the course, Brian Llewellyn, so it was a fitting win for his wife Jean's Wiston Dreamer in the opening Hunt members race under Alan Johns - the odds-on favourite clearly enjoying the ground Brian and his team had worked hard to produce.

South Pembrokeshire held a very strong hand last season in the horses that were produced from within the county and this looks very much the case again.

Trained in Ludchurch by his owner, Eric Clough, Pathian Prince, partnered by Wayne Maskill, won the Confined Hunts race by the closest margin of a head, from Silver Token and James Tudor, while the Men's Open winner, Rosies Peacock, trained by his owner David Llewellyn at Lambeeth Farm, made very light work of his opposition to win by a cosy three lengths, this time providing pilot James Tudor with compensation for his earlier near miss.

Only three went to post for the 'Ladies Open' race, but 8-1 shot Fair Point and Lucy Jones returned the victors and, in fact, the only finisher, in the fastest time of the day for owner/trainer Wyn Morris. The £500 purchase from Ascot sales in the summer, Fair Point has proved a successful one for Wyn who was prepared to take a gamble on the gelding, who had earlier that day been led out unsold from the sales ring.

Previous multiple winners, Chestnut Annie and Oca de Thaix, who ran in the race, were both beaten at the time when they both came to grief at the last fence - judged on this performance it will not be the last time we hear of the 11-year-old gelding this season.

David Brace, one of the biggest supporters of point to point racing in Wales, celebrated an owner/trainer treble. Teaming up with jockey Bradley Gibbs, the duo took the last three races on the card, the Restricted Race, with Bringonthebranston, Mystical Rose, the 5-2 race favourite in Division One of the 'Maiden' and possible Hunter chase bound Dunraven Prince in Maiden Division Two.

Bradley Gibbs, himself, had a day to remember as in addition to the David Brace trio, he added another win via Bens Moor in the Intermediate race, this time trained by William Vaughan for owner Monica O'Sullivan. Gibbs and Bens Moor only had to survive a jumping error three out before powering to a 22-length victory - just how long the gelding will remain pointing is unclear as Williams's brother, professional trainer Tim, will be wanting the gelding back to run under rules as a novice chaser after this performance.
