In the winter, the Frostbites are held on a Sunday morning, but summer heralds the Friday evening Friendly Foursomes. The first of the year was held last week and the weather obliged, with a touch of summer sunshine to go with it. Not quite warm enough yet for the shorts, but the layers were coming off as the sun warmed us up.
Only six pairs, but all keen to play good golf and start the weekend off with a good social evening. Partners are drawn for these competitions, so it is very much a case of testing the water with a new partner, but many good pairings have started their day in these friendlies.
There were no twos, so two bag draws were held, being won by Laura McQueen and Dinah Reed, and Gavin Field-Thomas and Heather Morgan (£6 per pair).
Gavin and Heather also just missed out on the prizes, coming third behind lady captain, Liz Storey, and her partner Richard Reed (£5 each). They had 28 points over 14 holes, but were pipped by one point by the winners, Sarah Waring and Mervyn Tucker (£7 each).
We all retired to the clubhouse after the game where we enjoyed a lovely meal and excellent company. Thanks to Matt Adams and stewardess Julie for looking after us.
The annual match against Ashburnham is on the mixed board, and the lady captain said first names down will be picked to play, so get your names down quickly. A two-course meal will be served after the match, which you will be expected to attend if you play.
The next Friendly Foursomes is on May 17 - please sign up as soon as you can.
The next mixed trophy is the Mathias Thomas Medal which is on May 26. This can be signed up for on the computer from May 3.
Finally, the Ping challenge draw has given us Derllys Court at Haverfordwest and is to be played on Wednesday, May 29, at 4 pm. Please check the notice board and tick if you are available for selection.
