Unusually for a Tuesday, the 24th saw an unusual number of visitors to the Seniors' Ambrose competition. Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marples were all circulating among the golfers, asking questions about the mysterious case of the unknown Eclectic champion.
The competition secretary - AKA Jimbo - was unavailable for interview, and it seems that the identity of the premier player must remain secret until Tuesday next - isn't it exciting?
No such secrecy surrounds the Ambrose results. Fifteen pairs of highly competitive players gathered in the clubhouse post-match to hear Captain Bart apportion the honours.
In third place - and hereby hangs a tale - Tony Ranoe and Jim Moffatt wrested this position from Stan Hudson and Bart Youll by the very narrowest of margins. Both pairs scored 39 points, and to separate them the count back went through the back 9, 6, 3, 1 - and finally the front six holes - close or what?
Second place was much easier to decide, Dudley Williams and Allen Watts amassing an enviable 41 points, just losing out to the victorious couple, Martin Neilan and Brian Waters, who scored a merciless 42 points and left the rest of the field in their wake.
And that was Tuesday - it was cold, it was windy - but it was fun. The charity raffle winning number was 36, and nobody had it, so next week's winner will pocket £20. There was no financial reward for scoring a two this week - which seriously disappointed Paul Bradley and Mel Hicks, because they had two - one on the 12th and one on the 17th. Never mind lads, you did get your name in the paper!
Next week, we shall have a 15-hole competition, followed by lunch, and at last the Eclectic champion will be revealed!
See you there!
