Talk to any old-timers in Tenby Golf Club and they will have a story to tell you about Sam Ackerman. In his tweed plus fours, sports jacket and cap, he sounded like quite a character. He was a founder member of the popular Friday Foursomes and loved playing mixed golf. So it is apt that we remember his name in this mixed trophy, draw-for-partners, that is always held as near to the longest day as we can make it.
It should have been a glorious June evening, but it was always threatening to rain, and it did a few times during the evening. However, all competitors turned up to do battle, and prayed for that little bit of luck that turns a good game into an amazing game.
There were no twos recorded, but the lucky Bag Draw winners, who won their entry fee back, were Gavin Field-Thomas and his partner Marion Clarke, John Ball and Laura McQueen, and Idwal David and Anne Wilks.
Scoring on the whole was good with Jim Moffat and captain's wife Carol Beecher just missing out on the prizes with 37 points. Funny to think that was a winning score last year.
In third place with 39 points were John Ball and Laura McQueen. Second was Idwal David with six times winner Anne Wilks. Their 41 points looked unbeatable until an exceptional score of 48 points was recorded by John 'stella' Gilman and Gill John.
Captain Chris Beecher presented the trophy to the winners and congratulated them on their superb score. John said his partner played well, and they were disappointed if they did not get three points on a hole!
Finally, a reminder that the next Friday Friendly Foursomes evening game is on July 19 and the sign-up sheet is on the notice board by the back door. The next trophy, the Usher Cup, is on Sunday, July 14. That can be booked now on the computer.
If there is any member who would like to play but does not have a partner just let me know via the Pro and I will fix you up.
