Glynneath, who were making their first visit to the Lewis Lloyd ground, brought a number of supporters, including their club president, Max Boyce.

Spectators witnessed a sparkling game of rugby, with some excellent tries by both teams.

Narberth played towards the clubhouse in the first half and from their kic- off there was a frenzied start, both teams determined to make an early impact.

Within five minutes, Glynneath winger Steff Stone showed himself to be a real threat when he sprinted down the far touchline following a planned kick to the corner. He failed in his objective, though, being forced out of play.

This was followed by further movements by their threes, showing a real threat to the Otters. In fact, their early efforts suggested that the home side were facing a major challenge.

Having had to defend defiantly, Narberth, after 10 minutes, were adjudged to have infringed and centre Jack O'Reilly put Glynneath ahead with a well-kicked penalty goal.

Five minutes later, much to the their supporters' dismay, the Otters were pulled up for offside and Jack O'Reilly scored a further three points, giving them a six-point lead.

Then, on 20 minutes, Narberth's Nick Gale collected the ball in his half and sprinted forward, only to be brought down and for Glynneath to infringe at the breakdown. Ianto Griffiths scored with a perfectly judged penalty kick.

A minute later, Glynneath scored the afternoon's first try. It commenced with a scrum, following which their fly-half kicked accurately to the far side for speed merchant Steff Stone to collect at pace. He then proceeded to swerve through the Narberth defence with dancing feet, before running clear to touch down for an unconverted try, giving Glynneath an 11-3 advantage.

At this point, Narberth looked to have a real fight on their hands to regain the initiative. Then, just after half-an-hour of play, Rhys Lane made a clean break, feeding centre Jason Howells, who forced his way towards the line, followed by a series of forward phases, before the pack pushed their way over the line, only for the touchdown to be held up, with the referee awarding a five-metre scrum. This time the Narberth eight scrummaged strongly and pushed Glynneath over the line for number eight Steffan Phillips to touch down, and Ianto Griffiths making no mistake with the conversion.

Before half-time, Glynneath failed with a penalty attempt and a drop goal, to leave the score 11-10 in their favour at the interval.

The visitors had clearly had the better of the exchanges in the first half and deserved their narrow lead, with winger Stone looking a real threat to the Otters and their small but speedy back row stalling the home attacks.

As the teams ran out for the second half, Narberth supporters were surprised to see Alex Jenkins had not returned, having been replaced by Lewis Wood.

Within two minutes, the Otters took the lead with a try in the bottom corner, scored by winger Nick Gale. Glynneath had kicked off, the ball was sent high back into their territory for it to be returned and Johnny Morgan, in his 22, fielded safely and, moving forward, passed to captain Steve Martin, who when challenged, quickly weaved his way through the Glynneath players and kicked forward towards the line for Gale to speed through, pick up the bouncing ball and hare over the line for Ianto Griffiths to convert, putting the Otters 17-11 in front.

It seemed as if both sets of coaches had instructed their teams to try and unsettle the respective defences with a series of high kicks.

The battle to gain the initiative continued and on 53 minutes ,Glynneath were awarded a penalty for Jack O'Reilly to successfully give his side a further three points.

Narberth coach Jon Dodd replaced Tom Slater in the front row with Ollie Evans and Tom Roberts came on to replace Gareth Bateman in the back row.

On 60 minutes, centre Steve Martin put Narberth further ahead with an unconverted try. The movement started with winger Tomi Jones collecting the ball in his own half and speeding forward, before passing on to his colleagues. The excellent Narberth threes then showed their paces for captain Steve Martin to finish off the movement.

On 67 minutes, key Narberth fullback Johnny Morgan received a yellow card, which was followed by an intense period of pressure as Glynneath made strenuous efforts to cross the line.

On 73 minutes, the visitors took a linout midfield on the far touchline, only for the ball to be overthrown. Always alert to the half chance, Narberth's Stuart Worrall gathered the ball and outran the visiting defenders to score an unconverted try.

At 27-14, the score looked relatively good for Narberth, but then replacement Lewis Wood was red-carded.

Glynneath came back at the Otters and from the resulting penalty, their pack mauled as a unit and steadily moved towards the line, for replacement second row Liam Pucket to score and Jack O'Reilly to convert.

At 27-21, Glynneath saw an opportunity to turn the tables, but four minutes later they were penalised in a kickable position and Ianto Griffiths made no mistake, giving a final score of 30-21 and enabling Narberth to obtain a win plus a bonus point in a real thriller of a game.

Whilst Glynneath speed merchant Steff Stone came near to being man-of-the-match, the match sponsors' award went to young Narberth second row Adam Clarke for his 80 minutes of hard graft and endeavour in what had been a fast moving and demanding game.

Commenting afterwards, Narberth head coach Jon Dodd said he was happy to have won the game, the team defended well and fitness told in the last quarter of the game. He felt against Glynneath they were fortunate to gain the bonus point.
