Outside half Toby Smith helped his side to a vital bonus point victory at Heywood Lane on Saturday as a strong performance from the Seasiders kept them deservedly in the hunt for the section's silverware. Two of the Andrew Price, FBM Holidays, G. D. Harries and Molson Coors sponsored Tenby Utd's four tries were scored by Smith who also added three conversions to his team's tally. The other two tries were scored for Tenby by in-form No 8 Roy Osborn and speedy Damo Miller who both had fine all round performances. From the word go, it was obvious that the Seasiders were out to first secure the win and then hunt down the vitally important bonus point, with a healthy respect for their opponents from Pontarddulais not preventing them from taking the game to them. Direct and strong running lines were made from skipper Chris James, winger Mark Heywood and centre Jack Price, helping make early inroads deep into Bont territory. With a high intensity to their game, the Tenby outfit looked like scoring from many an early attack, only to be thwarted at the last by a desperate defensive effort from Bont or by a fumbled pass which was just put down to their keen desire to get the job done. After skipper James got his troops together, the Seasiders settled into their stride and dominated possession in attack and stopped Pontarddulais in their tracks whenever they tried to advance on the United's line through a well-organised defence. A well-worked driving lineout was the platform for the first try of the afternoon and after hooker Wesley Bonser hit his man with the throw in, all eight of the Tenby pack drove towards the line and when the time was right powerful No 8 Osborn muscled his way to touch down for the score. Smith added the conversion and the home side were pleased with their early lead. Tenby kept the pressure on their guests in both attack and defence and never looked troubled with anything that Bont threw at them. With big tackles coming from Heywood, Lee Tucker, Jack Guerrreiro and Patrick Roberts, they kept the Pontarddulais backline in check. The second score of the day came when effervescent open side Luke Hansford pounced on a sloppy Bont pass that had gone to the ground and quickly turned the ball over in United's favour and got the ball away to Price who floated a lovely pass into the hands of Smith who crashed in for the try and he quickly converted it bringing his sides score up to 14-0 with 10 minutes remaining of the first half. Pontarddulais centre Gwyn Davies managed to get his side on the scoreboard just before the interval with a well-struck penalty and the teams went in for the oranges with Tenby ahead by 14 points to three. Whatever was said by the visitors coaching staff at half-time worked because their side came out of the blocks and for the first 10 minutes they piled on the pressure forcing the Tenby defence into overdrive and despite some relentless tackling the Bont managed to get themselves right back into the game scoring an unconverted try through No 8 Ethan Miles, who also added a penalty goal. With United narrowly ahead by 14 points to 11 and coming through the barrage of Pontarddulais attacks with their noses still in font, they dug deep to regain control and within one minute the ball had been secured by the strong Tenby pack and put through the slick hands of the three quarters and winger Miller had sped into the corner to round off a well worked move. Smith stepped up and landed the difficult conversion from the touchline to give his side a ten point gap. The visitors didn't give up though and again managed to breach the home defence on 72 minutes when centre John Lloyd ran in a try which again went without the conversion. The Seasiders remained composed and showed great confidence in their abilities and led from the front as always by James, they patiently worked through the phases before Roy Osborn showed good strength when he broke the tackles of two would be Bont defenders and held the ball up long enough to offload to the supporting Toby Smith who smashed his way over the line to claim the bonus point try. He then converted his score to bring an end to proceedings and finish off a solid game by himself and his team mates with Tenby Utd running out winners by 26 points to 16. With this important win earning the Seasiders the maximum five league points and keeping them in pole position alongside Gorseinon at the top of the table, the final two weekends of the season are sure to be nailbiters with it looking like it's going to go down to the wire with three teams currently in contention. It is now more than ever that the people of the town and the surrounding area are urged to come and support the boys in their big push to put Tenby rugby back in the higher divisions. Tenby travel to Llandeilo tomorrow (Saturday) and your support is needed and would be appreciated by all involved, so please make the journey up to Llandeilo to show your support. "With the Seasiders playing away in Llandeilo, they are unfortunately, unable to go along to support their friends from Tenby AFC tomorrow when they play in the Pembrokeshire Cup final, but they would like to pass on their best wishes to all of the footie boys," said first team manager Peter James. "Everyone involved with Tenby United RFC wish Tenby AFC all the best in the final and hope that both teams can be successful in bringing home their respective Pembrokeshire Cups this season.
