Two Pembrokehire pupils have been selected to represent GBR at the Underwater Hockey World Championships in Hobart, Tasmania this summer.
Eighteen-year-old Oliver Crawford and his sister, fifteen-year-old Victoria Crawford are both members of the Pembroke Octopush Club, who play underwater hockey.
Oliver who is studying at Pembrokeshire College and Victoria a pupil at Tenby’s Greenhill School, have been training with the National Octopush Squad for some time at Leeds and have recently been selected to play for the Great Britain Under 19s men and ladies teams, at the World Championships, to be held in Hobart, between July 7 and 28, this year.
Octopush was started in the 1950s as a means of fitness training for amateur divers and being a young sport is not well known.
This sport is currently seeking Olympic Sport recognition, however until this is established the teams receive no grant/monetary assistance to attend/facilitate these GB training camps or Worldwide Championships.
The cost of attending the championships in Hobart is quite considerable, and despite financial backing from their family, the siblings are seeking sponsorship for what will be a huge opportunity in their sport
