It's always mildly exciting to click onto the Tenby Seniors website, press the INFO tab and discover at what time and with whom you will be playing on Tuesday. For November 4 there were 29 entrants, the weather forecast predicted showers - and by 8.30 you couldn't move in the clubhouse for mature gentlemen waiting to get out and compete.
The weather forecast turned out to be a trifle pessimistic, because only one short sharp burst of rain affected the players, although the wind did make itself felt. The conditions were no deterrent to the 10 groups of seniors out on the course, and the final scores ranged from really good to..... Really?
Post play, and after the customary shoe change, drinks order and raffle ticket purchase, it was time to pay attention to our leader, captain Bart, as he announced the following scores in mellifluous tones, and distributed prize money with the kind of generosity only demonstrated by those who do not hail from Aberdeen or Cardigan!;
In third place, our club president and natty dresser, Russell Clarke, with an enviable 38 points.
Runner-up - and only pipped at the post by the narrowest of margins - the well-known Bill Davies, who scored a remarkable 42 points.
The winner, who played his socks off and was immune to sloppy shots and imperfect putt, Ron Murphy, who amassed a quite amazing 43 points.
Not to be outdone, Tony Morgan and Roger Schofield both scored 2s on the 17th hole, and were suitably rewarded for their skills.
The charity raffle this week raised £31, and as nobody picked the bonus ball number last week, the prize rolls over to next week when the lucky winner will receive £20.
The photograph shows a proud and pleased Ron Murphy being presented with his winnings by stand-in treasurer Tony Morgan, whilst being heartily congratulated by the photogenic captain Bart.
Next week we shall be playing a non-qualifying Ambrose competition, a mini Texas Scramble which is great fun - see you there!
