Despite a late second half comeback, GD Harries, FBM Holidays, Molson Coors and Andrew Price sponsored Tenby United were forced to settle for a losing bonus point against Gorseinon last Saturday due to a lacklustre first half performance that saw many try-scoring opportunities go begging.
It was Gorseinon who seemed to shake off the Six Nations hangover first and they went into the interval 13-nil in front and deservedly so.
The Seasiders did play their part in what was a very scrappy first half and looked threatening on many occasion, but they couldn't quite finish off any of their attempts on the visitors' line, and this was not as a result of the Gorseinon defensive efforts, but through unforced errors and poor decision-making from the United.
Gorseinon's first half points came through a try by blindside flanker Jamie Evans following a well-worked move, which was converted by winger Rhodri Phelps, who also added two penalties to his tally and gave his side their confortable interval lead.
Mo Crockford's half-time oranges seemed to do the trick for the home side as they struck back early in the second half through an unconverted try from openside flanker Luke Hansford. The effervescent wing forward grounded the ball following a powerful driving lineout from the Tenby pack which Gorseinon couldn't stop.
Both sides traded blows for the next 25 minutes and the Seasiders began to settle and made some good breaks deep into Gorseinon territory, but again, they couldn't turn the pressure into points and the visitors were allowed to clear their lines and pushed the United back into their own half through good use of the boot.
The game looked to be decided in the 76th minute when Gorseinon prop Anthony Pompa barged his way over for the score following a lineout on the United's five-metre line. Despite the conversion attempt sailing wide of the uprights, the Swansea outfit still held a healthy lead of 18 points to Tenby United's five with just four minutes remaining on the clock.
This is when the Seasiders showed that they are still a very dangerous side and that they were determined to battle to the bitter end in their bid to keep their division one status and staged their comeback, albeit a little late in the day.
Damo Miller took the ball deep in the Tenby 22 and a fine side-step foxed the Gorseinon defence as he hurtled up field before being stopped on the visitors'10-metre line, Miller passed the ball inside to the supporting Roy Osborn, who linked with nippy winger Jordan Asparassa, who made good ground of his own before he linked with centre Jack Price, who crashed over in the corner for the try of the game.
Jonathan Rogers landed the touchline conversion, despite the strong Heywood Lane wind, to put his side just six points behind going into the final minute of play.
Straight from the restart, the Seasiders found themselves back within striking range of the Gorseinon try-line thanks to some powerful forward play and they intelligently kept the ball alive with the clock striking 80 minutes.
Replacement scrum-half Will Crockford got the ball wide to Rogers and he floated a pass to the powerful Toby Smith, who wasn't going to be stopped as he crashed over in the corner for the try.
With the wind now up to gale force, the conversion was always going to be a big ask from the touchline again and, despite a well struck effort, the ball just went wide of the posts.
The game ended with Gorseinon narrowly holding on to their lead and winning by 18 points to 17, but the never-give-up attitude of the Tenby side earned them a vital bonus point, which could prove critical in the final weeks of the season.
