With the Dizzy Rascals competing in the RS200 Nationals in Tenby this week, it’s been left to me to do the sailing report.
With forecast winds of only a few miles an hour, the racing wasn’t promising, but despite this, a group of about 10 sailors turned up.
After a short debate, Simon and Tom O decided there was enough wind to race, but it took further persuasion of the teenage paddle boarders to put down their boards and go rig their boats!
This meant a late race start time of closer to 11 am. The rescue teams of Mark, Trish, Terry and Ann made record time getting out on the water and laying the marks ready for racing.
Once underway, Ed and James took an early lead in their lightweight boats, followed by the Laser fleet, RS Vision and Feva.
The contest was close between the leading boats, with Ed and James swapping lead position several times over the two laps. Ben (as always) established himself as lead Laser, whilst their was fierce competition between James, Rosie and Lloyd once James realised the race had started.
The RS Vision followed on, completing two good laps with style, even though Hammer Head Harry had tried to bend the boom with his head on launch.
Bringing up the rear were two boats with brand new sailors on, the Feva with Sam and new boy Iolo and recently qualified Thomas trying out the club Laser. The final results were Ed, first, in his RS100, James second and Ben third.
Thank you to Simon and Tom and to all the rescue crews for getting out there and making it happen. The very unreliable weather this year has meant Junior Helm and Ladies Helm have already been postponed twice.
These races are now scheduled to be run this Sunday, starting at 4 pm. Also this week our trainees received their level 1 and 2 certificates - well done Charles, Joe, Thomas, Iolo and Rhys. Level three awards were given to Rosie and Lloyd, who should be qualified as assistant instructors by the end of the season.
Currently, we have 10-year-old twins, Hugo and Edward, out training on a Thursday and the photo shows how well they are doing!
This leaves me to wish Paul and Julia the best of luck in the Nationals this week at Tenby.
Bye for now.
