Summer Cruising

The extended summer weather has encouraged more voyages by cruiser members which is great after so many summers when the inducements to go out were few and far between.

Having visited Lundy, Instow, Barnstable, Ilfracombe and a lot of the Bristol Channel in between two weeks ago, Spartacus, in conjunction with Shady Lady and Elizabeth planned a joint trip round to the Haven last weekend.

Sherpa Mor has also been 'round the corner', sailing to Dale and then up through Jack Sound. Unfortunately, persistent sea fog on the northern side of St. David's peninsular prevented them from going further north than Ramsey, but St. Brides Bay provided several great days of sailing and a really warm welcome was received in Solva. The Griffiths's commented that the novelty of walking to and from the boat on one of the visitor moorings and to the cafe or pub without getting your feet muddy is worth going for almost on its own! On the run back, they saw their first dolphins of the year being joined by over a dozen as they came almost over the top of The Gowan Shoals which shows just how calm the seas were. All in all perfect sailing in gentle breezes and under sunny skies - makes you realise just how much we have on our doorstep !

Lady Helm and Junior Helm

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees a race for these two awards to be held at 10 am. This follows on from the intensive training week during which trainees will have extended their sailing skills and experience as well as seeing a great deal of sun and beautiful weather.

Next Club Races

Well - we are now into the 'Late Season' for dinghy racing and the first two of these start at 10 am this Sunday.

Nautical Nip

The chart of the area of sea which the cruisers covered last week contains many interesting names. Some fairly common, such as Green Scar, Black Scar and Stack Rocks - others more unusual such as Hand Marks and Turbot Bank - is the latter related to a wealth of that particular species? Returning round Castlemartin, John Griff reflected as to why is it Saint Gowan Shoals off the coast, but Saint Govan's Head on the coast? Does anyone know the reason for the apparently conflicting 'v' and 'w'?
