Sunday Racing
A typical Saundersfoot club race last Sunday, with 11 classes of dinghy represented amongst the 13 competitors, with handicaps ranging from 1025 to 1656, producing a very varied race, with plenty of calculation for the OOD's abacus to do!
Such a mixed fleet certainly makes it more perplexing for uninitiated onlookers to work out what is happening in the race, but the variety of colours, shapes and sizes does make a grand spectacle.
An untaxing force 2-3 ushered the fleet round the Monkstone, Pendine, Harbour course set by Graham and Tom, with Mick, Jude and Martin on patrol.
This was a good initiation for newly-qualified sail trainees Andy and Angus Paget in their GP14, who were warmly welcomed to our Sunday racing.
Peter Bower (Phantom) topped the fleet with three laps, followed by Paul Johnson (Solo) completing two laps to take second and Ben Roberts (Optimist) gaining a well-deserved third place, pushing Keith Jones (Streaker) into fourth and Chris Bannister (Blaze) into fifth.
The new Paget GP14 gave James Roberts's GP14 a good chase to keep him on his mettle and stay ahead.
Two races this next Sunday, starting at 1.30 pm.
Presentation
A special thank-you was organised at the clubhouse last week for Alison Kavanagh from Valero and Laura Allen Clarke from LNG Hook, whose organisations have helped to fund new equipment for the club - as shown in the picture this week which also includes - Graham Wellman (sailing captain and bosun), David James (commodore), Martin Andrews (secretary) and Jackie Riby (membership secretary).
They were thanked by the commodore for their generous support and all enjoyed a delicious buffet prepared by Rob Tallboys and Jackie.
Evening Sailing
Last Wednesday's evening sail saw seven boats out in fairly strong conditions with gusts of force 5, but the two GP14s, two Toppers, a Solo, Tasar and Optimist coped well and all enjoyed a good race on a standard Monkstone, Pendine, Harbour course and agreed that the outing had been great fun.
No evening sailing this week - next session is at 5 pm on Wednesday, August 15.
Saundersfoot Regatta
Great plans are developing for the Regatta to be held over the long Bank Holiday weekend, August 25 to 27.
On the Saturday there will be two dinghy races from 10.30 am, starting a 'Family Fun Day' with a great mix of wild activities kicking-off at 3 pm.
Everyone is invited to come and dig for treasure, get wet in the watercraft relay, have a go at the five-a-side football competition, try your skill at boules or pit your wits in the treasure hunt.
Good ales and food will be available throughout the day at the clubhouse and we hope that many families will join in.
On the Sunday, a dinghy race will be held at 12 noon, followed by a pursuit race, and if you don't know what that comprises, there is only one way to find out!
A long distance race will start at 1.30 pm on the Sunday - more details later.
As always volunteers are sought to help with all aspects, both on the water - please contact Graham on 07890 987825 or [email protected]">[email protected] and off the water - please contact Anne-Marie on 01834 812249 or [email protected]">[email protected].
Social
The club is open every Friday from around 8.30 pm.
