Sunday Racing
A fleet of five Toppers, three Solos, an RSVision, a Streaker, a Phantom, a Blaze, a Tasar, a Laser Radial and a Laser 2000 made up another excellent turnout for Race 11 the last in the mid-season series last Sunday. Conditions were good with a more normal south, south-westerly breeze and gorgeous sunshine at last. Paul Johnson and Tom set a Pendine, Amroth, Harbour course with which all competitors must now be familiar even if it is not always mastered! The Huw and Hinksman team once again provided patrol cover - this week Harry (H) instead of Finlay (H).
After four laps, Peter Bower (Phantom) headed Keith Jones (Streaker) by a sufficient margin to win after handicap adjustments. Paul Griffiths (Solo) and Chris Bannister (Blaze) duelled it out with only a 10 second gap after almost 4,000 seconds of racing to take third and fourth respectively.
In the Topper Class, everyone sailed three laps with Rachel Tudor taking the win, followed in fairly swift order by Phil, James, John and Peter. Girl power thus prevailed - come on chaps - forget the after-you politeness mode now! Steve Hinksman (RS Vision) clearly enjoyed the sunny day.
Evening Sailing
A modest group of old salts enjoyed a very pleasant evening sailing round the cans last Tuesday. In such ideal conditions, it was a pity that more new (even younger!) sailors did not avail themselves of the opportunity. The next evening sail is at 5 pm on Wednesday (not Tuesday) August 15 so make a note of the date now to avoid missing out.
Sail Training
For once with schools broken up, the sail trainees on this week's training course are enjoying probably the best sailing conditions of the year. More details of this action next week.
Helms of the Year this Weekend
Tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 pm, ladies will sail for the Lady Helm of the Year and the Stanley Edwards Cup, whilst juniors (under 18) will be competing as fiercely as only juniors can for the Junior Helm of the Year and the prestigious beautiful wooden Lady Merthyr Trophy. The forecast at the time of writing gives a decent force 4 westerly so there should be some good racing and another good spectacle for locals, visitors and holiday makers on the 'prom' - or for an even better view from the clubhouse bar!
Next Sunday's Racing
Now that summer appears to have started at last, the sailing programme tells us that the next two races starting at 2.30 pm this coming Sunday are the first in the Late Season Series! So long as the decent warmer weather continues who cares!
Saundersfoot Regatta
Our sailing captain is asking for volunteers to help with running the races over the Regatta Long Weekend, August 25-27. Please contact Graham on 07890 987825 or [email protected]">[email protected]. By then, everyone will have watched the Olympics and surely have been inspired by the UK sailing results to give a little time to help promote the sport at the club - we need your help so please offer.
Social
Don't forget that the club is open every Friday from around 8.30 pm.
