Sunday Racing
With the extreme wind conditions last Sunday, the racing had prudently to be cancelled.
As an independent comment on the weather - we seem to have Mother Nature thumbing her nose at our hi-tech society in that no sooner is a hose pipe ban announced for large portions of the country, we record the wettest April ever and there are regular flood warnings on the media!
One imagines that it must be rather peeving to receive a hosepipe ban and drought notice on the doormat at the same time as flood water is lapping over the sill!
When the Victorians could build amazing long-term projects upon which we still depend today, why is it we seem unable to balance the uneven water reserves from one part of the country to another and avoid the fiascos of restricting water to people suffering floods? Anyway, back to the sailing!
A gentle evening start (we hope!) at 5 pm for next Sunday's race.
Megan's Gold
Club member Megan Borman is sailing from strength to strength. During last weekend's South Wales CYRCS (Youth Racing Circuit Meeting) at Mumbles Yacht Club, she secured two firsts and a second to gain top place in the gold fleet. Very well done Megan!
Darts
Last Friday was the intense local derby meeting against Tenby SC, with tension wound like a clock spring, muscles flexed and tuned, nerves jangling, competitive adrenalin flowing, hostility vibrating... or it would possibly have been portrayed like this had this been a Murdoch tabloid! In fact, as always, it was a very relaxed, friendly and enjoyable visit to their welcoming clubhouse and a great evening was had by all. The fact that we came home with a win was a bonus, but not one we are gloating on! Tonight (Friday), we are away to The Sun at St. Florence and the result may well revert to normal form!
Club Social
All oldies and youngies are welcome tomorrow (Saturday) night for an evening of great entertainment and enjoyment. We look forward to seeing many members and friends from 7.30 pm on for the '60s and '70s night.
Stop press: We have just secured a live act to entertain us during this event. Nick Berry is famous for his long appearances in Crossroads and Heartbeat and whilst this is not quite '60s or '70s, we have not quite secured Nick Berry - but we have got Nick Berridge! We are sure that everyone will enjoy his live contribution to a potentially great evening. Don't miss the action; get down to the club on Saturday.
Training
We are always in need of more members who can run or help to run dinghy races and there is an opportunity for members to be briefed on the basics and join an official RYA club race officers' course to be held at the Pembrokeshire Yacht Club (PYC) Clubhouse, Gelliswick, Milford Haven, on Saturday, May 26, from 10 am - 4 pm. This is aimed at aspiring or existing club OODs/race officers who wish to gain/improve their background knowledge of best practice in the running of club races.
We would urgently encourage all sailing members to consider attending. Skipper's Mate has undertaken this course and can recommend it. Please contact Paul Johnson for more details, tel. 814145. It may be possible to pool transport arrangements.
