FINALS WEEKEND

Saundersfoot Bowling Club held their club tournament finals last weekend and thankfully the weather stayed mostly fine.

Fifteen of the 17 matches were played, with only the Ironman Wales event on Sunday preventing two games being contested.

Pride of place must go to Myrddin Dennis who contested four finals, winning them all, including a clean sweep of the main singles events.

As well as becoming the men's club champion for the fourth time, Myrddin also won the handicap singles, the two-wood singles and together with Ceris Hewlings, the mixed pairs.

He could yet make it five wins as he is involved in the four-wood pairs final tomorrow.

Relatively new member John Haig also had a successful time in winning all three of his finals, the Rabbits singles, the over 60s pairs with Stew Howe and the two-wood pairs with Mike Ashbridge.

The ladies were not to be outdone, with former Welsh international and club president Ann Lewis also chalking up three wins.

Ann became the ladies club champion yet again, also winning the two-wood singles and the four-wood pairs with Gwenda Rees.

Club vice-chairlady Kath Blayney won the other main ladies singles event with her third success in the handicap competition.

To complete the weekend, Brian McKehon won the Over 60s singles, Rene Silcox the ladies rabbits singles, Nev Ruff and Mike Ashbridge the Jubilee Pairs and Angela Roberts, Marion Evans and Steve Dick the mixed triples.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the two remaining matches will take place starting at 10 am with the men's four-wood pairs final when Stew Howe and Myrddin Dennis will be up against Nev Ruff and Steve Dick.

This will be followed by the men's triples final with Alan Brace, Paul Blayney and Graham Hughes against Roy Kennion, Nev Ruff and Steve Dick.

Curry night

Saundersfoot Bowling Club roared with fun and laughter last Thursday with a curry night, plus entertainment, was held to raise funds for the club.

Organised by the bar committee, led by Saundersfoot ladies captain Angela Roberts, the evening saw over £400 raised towards the purchase of a new glass washer and glasses.

After being welcomed by Alwen Hughes, Angela's entertainment assistant, members and friends enjoyed a delicious home-made curry before the Singing Nuns performed to rapturous applause.

TV presenter Phillip Schofield made a guest appearance and staged the bowling club's very own version of the game show All Star Mr. and Mrs.

Comedian Frank Spencer also made a starring role, before club president Ann Lewis and Brian Deeley were crowned the winners.

The raffle, with a wonderful selection of prizes (many thanks to those who kindly donated), was drawn, before president Ann thanked Angela, Amanda, Alwen, Stephanie and their helpers for arranging a successful evening which closed with a sing-song led by Alwen.

MEN'S MEETING

There will be an end of season men's meeting in the clubhouse on Sunday, September 29, at 11 am, and all male members are urged to attend.

TONY EDWARDS

Life member and trustee Tony Edwards has recently returned home from hospital after an operation and is wished a speedy recovery from all his friends at the Saundersfoot club.

FIXTURE

Only one match remains to complete the 2013 season, with the Saundersfoot men entertaining Milford Haven, on Sunday, at 2 pm.

The boys will have the incentive of knowing that a 14-point win will give them a fourth place finish in the Division One table.

After the match, the green will close for what has again been an all too quick season and those members who are playing indoors, whether at Heatherton or in village halls at short mat, are wished success.
