SAUNDERSFOOT 87 PEMBROKE DOOK 75
After a narrow defeat away to Whitland in their first Carruthers Welsh Cup group game, Saundersfoot were hoping for a better result last Saturday when they entertained Pembroke Dock.
The villagers were quickly out of the blocks and at five ends led by nine shots.
Their lead had been extended to 13 shots at the halfway mark and 21 shots after 15 of the 21 ends had been played and, although the visitors made a spirited comeback, the villagers held on for a comfortable 12 shots win.
Rink two saw the only loss of the day, with Brian Deeley, Neil Hensman, Barrie Lee and captain Don Poole up against the experienced Brian Dowling.
Although only four shots adrift after 16 ends, a poor finish, which included dropped counts of two fours and a three, resulted in a 16-shot defeat.
On rink three, Steve Dick skipped Nev Ruff, new recruit Adam Hensman and Alan Brace to a narrow three-shot win over the evergreen Les Davies.
Graham Hughes, Joe Dennis, Roy Pring and skip Berwyn Dennis had a real ding-dong battle against Ken Edwards on rink four.
The highlight of the day came on the fifth end when the Saundersfoot boys picked up a hot shot, which to the uninitiated means scoring the maximum with all woods counting and is a feat that is rarely achieved.
The Dockers, however, did not let their heads drop and came roaring back with a count of six two ends later.
Thereafter, the lead changed several times and scores were level at 19-all after 14 ends.
Picking up a five on the next helped to settle home nerves and the visitors only managed to win one of the last seven ends to give Saundersfoot an 11-shot win.
On rink five, Roy Kennion, Paul Blayney, John Dugmore and skip Myrddin Dennis produced the best performance, winning the 'kitty' along the way, with a 14-shot win over Richard Jones.
Tomorrow (Saundersfoot) are home again in their last group game when Haverfordwest are the visitors.
Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Pembroke Dock skips only) were:
B. Deeley, N. Hensman, B. Lee, D. Poole 12; B. Dowling 28.
N. Ruff, A. Hensman, A. Brace, S. Dick 19; L. Davies 16.
G. Hughes, J. Dennis, R. Pring, B. Dennis 32; K. Edwards 21.
R. Kennion, P. Blayney, J. Dugmore, M. Dennis 24; R. Jones 10.
WHITLAND LADIES 44 ST. ISSELL'S LADIES 32
The ladies of St. Issell's travelled to play their counterparts from Whitland last Saturday and, although missing several key players, put up a spirited performance in a 12-shot defeat.
New recruit Janet Rees led for skip Sue Roden, with Brenda Davies at number two and Audrey Williams third, and led by eight shots after 13 ends against Andrea Thomas.
This was followed soon afterwards, however, with dropped counts of a five and seven on successive ends and an eventual 23 shots to 15 defeat.
Captain Kath Blayney, junior member Chelsea Baskerville, Dianne Rigden and skip Ceris Hewlings had a real battle against Cally Jones and, although 12 shots down at one stage, fought back to eventually just lose out by 21 shots to 17.
MILFORD HAVEN LADIES 23 SAUNDERSFOOT LADIES 40
Saundersfoot ladies notched up a 17-shot win and all six points when they travelled to play Milford Haven Ladybirds.
Sue McKehon, Anne Evans, Gemma Amos and Lorna Bissell defeated M. Coe by 16 shots to 12 and captain Angela Roberts, Steph Amos, Viv Edwards and Marion Evans won comfortably over Margaret Carter by 24 shots to 11.
