Saundersfoot 84
Saundersfoot opened their Division One Pembrokeshire League campaign last Saturday with an away fixture against Milford Haven and got off to a winning start.
On a day that felt more like winter than spring, the teams were evenly matched, with the villagers just keeping their noses in front throughout and eventually gaining a seven-shot victory and with three rinks winning, also getting 12 of the 14 points at stake.
On rink one, Billy Glynn, Mike Carr, Barrie Lee and skip Stew Howe found themselves six shots down after just two ends to a strong home team skipped by Roy Thomas, but fought back to level the scores at the tea break.
Edging in front on the 12th end, the lead, although a slender one, was never lost and a five-shot victory by 20 shots to 15 was the result.
On rink two, Eddie Smith, Dave Roberts, Joe Dennis and Berwyn Dennis were never behind against Tony Ellyatt and ran out winners by 22 shots to 13.
Rink three saw the only defeat of the day, with Dennis Reed, Nev Ruff, John Dugmore and Steve Dick going down to Keith Wood by 28 shots to 18.
Despite losing, the Saundersfoot four picked up six shots on the 19th and 20th ends, which certainly calmed the nerves of the whole team and contributed to the win.
On rink four, Roy Kennion, captain Neil Hensman, Paul Blayney and skip Brian Desmond had a dream start, picking up a five on the first end, but back came the home four skipped by Gareth Barrett to leave the scores all-square after 15 ends played.
On the last end, the villagers found themselves one shot down on the scoreboard and were also one down on the head thanks to a Milford front toucher.
Fortunately, Paul moved the white with a weighted shot to the waiting Saundersfoot back bowls to secure four shots and a 24 shots to 21 win.
An encouraging start then, but a tough prospect awaits tomorrow (Saturday) when they play Whitland at home with a 2 pm start.
Milford Ladybirds 32
St. Issell's ladies 36
The ladies of St. Issell's also played at Milford last Saturday and they, too, came away with a win, their second of their three games played so far.
Leading by one shot at the halfway point, the situation had been reversed exactly after 18 ends, but winning four of the remaining six ends over the two rinks ensured a four-shot win.
Rink scores with St. Issell's first and Milford skips only:
Lyn Statters, Audrey Williams, Diane Rigden, Beryl Lewis 23; Margaret Carter 11.
Kath Blayney, Brenda Davies, Sue Roden, Ann Lewis 13; Marge Coe 21.
