Tenby Utd Youth 40 - Pembroke Youth 17: A beautiful sunny Saturday at Heywood Lane was what the players and supporters of both Tenby and Pembroke youth teams had to look forward to.
From the off Tenby were immediately on the offensive and with some good structured play and big midfield carries especially by Jack Brown, Lucas Probert and Jake Roberts, Tenby managed to force a penalty just inside the Pembroke 22’.
The quick thinking by the elusive Tenby 9 Cam Broadhurst caught the Pembroke team off guard and he managed to cross for the first try, the conversion was just missed by Harry Rossiter.
Again from the restart the young Seasiders launched another attack and good work up front by Matt Busby, skipper Will Swales, Taz Richards gave the backs some good ball to run which they did leading to Broadhurst scampering over for his second.
Rossiter knocked the conversion over to make it 12-0 to Tenby.
Pembroke clawed their way back into the game with a converted try, but from this Tenby managed to open up from a turnover with great hands from Rossiter, Jack Gooding, Oakley Milton, Evan Watson and Ollie Brown giving Dylan Johns space to run, and run he did up the touch line to score a fine try, again converted by Rossiter.
With the half time oranges drawing near, a lapse in concentration by Tenby gave Pembroke another try which went unconverted to leave the score at 19-12 to the Seasiders at the interval.
Ollie Brown injured during the first half, was replaced by Joe Andrews, and he was in the action straight from the restart with some lovely running from deep making inroads into the Pembroke half.
Good work at the lineout by Morgan Davies put the Tenby backs on front foot ball and with the hardworking Jack Brown smashing his way over for a try, the conversion by Rossiter made it 26-7.
Tenby rang the changes with Jevon Thomas replacing Johns, and Rhys Grigg replacing the work horse Caleb O’Neill.
With the game in the bag Tenby really opened up and a chip kick by the Pembroke 10, was gathered by Milton who set up a ruck on the halfway, a quick ball led to replacement Jay Brace hitting up.
Again good handling in midfield gave the powerful Roberts space to bulldozer over the Pembroke 6 giving Grigg a nice little run in under the posts, again converted by Rossiter.
With the bench emptied Tenby had replacements Alex Everall, Evan Day, Blue, Joe Simmonds on for the final quarter showing what quality depth there is in this squad, and more good work from the Tenby youngsters gave powerhouse prop Brown the opportunity to score his second, converted by Rossiter, to complete a good day with the boot off the tee and out of hand.
To their credit Pembroke managed to have the last score on the final whistle with the conversion missed leaving Tenby with a 40-17 victory.
With a number of players unavailable through injury etc the young seasiders still managed to field 23 players which is testament to their commitment to the cause, especially captain Will Swales who had broken his nose in the game.
A big thank you goes to Tracey and Mally again for the refreshments.
