On Sunday, Tenby Under 9s were home to Neyland. They had worked hard in training this week in preparation and were up for what they knew would be a big challenge. As the chant of ‘Ready, Ready, Ready’ filled the air, it was clear how much Tenby wanted this. Led by Connor, who was captain for the day, Tenby applied pressure from the first whistle and this allowed Dylan to score within the first few minutes of the game. Neyland were quick to reply and scored to make it one-a-piece. A lovely break by Owen and some clever running from Carter which had him side-step three Neyland tackles saw him set-up Dylan for Tenby’s second of the day. Tackles were having to be put in defensively by both teams, but some quick footwork by Connor saw him run the length of the pitch to go over in the corner. Tenby were working together as a team which was giving them the edge over a strong Neyland side and this enabled Carter to cross the Neyland line again. Another phase of controlled passing saw Connor quickly go over. Tenby were looking good, but Neyland rallied together at this point and even after some big tackles by Tenby crossed the line for their second. Tenby hit straight back with a try by Louie, but Neyland were building momentum, and in the last few minutes of the first half, crossed Tenby’s line two more times having the half-time score stand at 7-4 to the Seasiders.
A team talk by the coaches at half-time had Tenby realise the game was far from won so came out firing in the second half and saw Connor cross the Neyland line quickly. The weather was making the ball slippy in the hands, but Tenby’s passing and excellent teamwork created another opportunity for Carter to score. This teamwork continued with some fantastic tackling in defence which saw them turnover the ball and regain possession. The ball was then passed through every players hands to reach Dylan and enable him to score a great team try. Owen followed up quickly with another Tenby score and the Seasiders were looking strong. Neyland weren’t giving up though and produced some lovely rugby to run in their fifth. But Tenby were determined to end on a high and Louie responded with a try to finish the game at 12-5 to the seasiders. Man of the match for Tenby was Dylan.
