Following a dry summer, the Tenby links is now in an excellent overall condition. The wonderful greens were slick and true and were appreciated by all the participants, almost half of whom were not members of Tenby GC.
Each team comprised four players and with three-quarters handicap allowance, the best two stableford scores counted on each hole.
Of the 23 teams, 11 matched or bettered the par 72 points, which was a creditable score in view of the adverse conditions. It was noticeable that the rain took its toll as the round progressed - most teams scoring less points on the back nine than the front one.
Special mention must go to the Rotarians from Burnham Beeches Rotary Club. They travelled a long way but, as they are all relatively new to golf, they did find the Tenby course rather tough although they thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Steffan Jenkins and friends, from Ashburnham, Glynhir and Wenvoe GCs, totalled 75 points for seventh place. Local members in the Trefalun Park carded 76 points for sixth place.
South Haven Construction's aggregate was 77 points, but they lost out for the fourth prize on the back nine to the Carmarthen Round Table A team.
In third place with 78 points were the team sponsored by Willcox Financial and Hains and Lewis which contained three Tenby members in Rob Willcox, Loz Phillips and newcomer Piers Bradbury, plus Cardigan's Phil Daniel.
Runners-up and with a score they must have thought was good enough to win were the ACDC team comprising Andrew Cope, of Tenby GC, his two sons Nicky and Richard, together with Adam Thomas who all play at Trefloyne. Each player contributed well to their fine score of 83 points.
This was the 24th annual Rotary charity golf day and W. and M. J. Rossiter have always entered a team. This year, their team consisted of Simon Rossiter, his brother Richard, plus friends Gavin Scotcher (who was also in one winning team last year) and John Broomhead. Again the scoring was fairly evenly spread throughout the team, but Gavin's four birdies in the first five holes gave them a great start.
An outward nine of 45 points followed by 41 points coming home gave the Rossiter quartet a fantastic 86 points and made them very worthy winners of the 2013 Rotary charity golf day.
Following the prize presentation, the audience were entertained by the fabulous cockney comedian Bob Webb. The evening culminated in an excellent raffle - a few prizes still have to be collected.
The event proved to be another success. Air Ambulance Wales and Paul Sartori will be just two of the charities which will benefit from the proceeds.
Tenby and Saundersfoot Rotary Clubs wish to thank Tenby Golf Club for allowing them to host the day, Rhys Harry and Tom Hilling, of the pro shop, for providing and displaying the prizes and Gareth Phillips and his staff for the post-golf meal.
However, the event would not take place if it was not for the generosity of the various individuals, companies and organisations who sponsored teams and holes etc. Both Rotary Clubs and indeed the charities which will receive money are extremely grateful for the continued support they receive.
Tenby Rotary Club is extremely fortunate to have its fundraising events this year sponsored by McCarthy and Stone, the later living specialists who are currently developing Paxton Court on the site of the former Royal Gatehouse Hotel.
