Pontyates 45 pts.

Pembroke Dock Quins 0

The Quins left Pontyates on Saturday still looking for their first away win of the season, as Ponty took full revenge for the 80-point mauling dished out by the Quins last year.

It did not take long for the home side to get on the scoresheet, when a Quins discretion was punished when the hosts' outside-half Kieron Evans with a fine line kick sent his side to within five yards of the Quins' line.

From the lineout and after a few attempts to get over the line, Ponty second row Osian Hughes forced his way over, and Evans added the extras.

The Quins were soon back defending their line and when a kick was charged down, scrum-half Richard Jones pounced on the loose ball in the corner to score, and Evans converted again from the touchline to put his side 14-0 in front.

The Quins were now up against it, and nothing was going right for them, despite some fine tackling and determined running from skipper Barry Parsons and Alex Pierce.

Ponty's third try was not long coming, and this time it was Evans, who was proving a real thorn in the Quins side, who scored underneath the posts to give himself an easy conversion.

With the score now at 21-0 to the hosts, the Quins continued to defend admirably and it was now a question whether or not Ponty would get a bonus point or not before half-time.

They need not have worried as flanker and captain Jamie Cooper crossed in the corner.

Evans once again converted from the touchline and for good measure the outside-half also put over a straight forward penalty with the last kick of the half to send his side in 31-0 at the break.

The signs were ominous for the Quins at the start of the second half when virtually straight from the kick-off flanker Richard Guest ran in from 40 yards for another converted try.

With the score now at 38-0 and a large part of the game still to go, a hammering looked on the cards, but it was to the Quins' credit that they only conceded one more converted try through home centre Gareth Williams.

The Quins did not concede a point in the final half-hour as they tackled as if they were defending a slender lead, especially as they were down to 14 men when it seemed the whole of Pontyates fell on top of second row Bob Lovell, who was forced to leave the field.

For the Quins, the effort and commitment, especially in the last 30 minutes when they could easily have capitulated, spoke volumes.

Dai Rees at scrum-half, who looks a lot more comfortable in his favoured position, and the entire Quins back row were exceptional in defence in not taking a backward step.

The Quins as the season progresses will have easier examinations than this as Ponty were totally focused from the word go in inflicting as much damage as they could.

And with Keiron Evans contributing 20 points with a 100 per cent kicking display, it certainly made things very difficult for the Quins.
