Last Saturday, Pendine commenced its second year in the first division of the Pembrokeshire League, having surprisingly come fourth in the league last year, and now faced Pembroke Dock BC.
Unfortunately, both teams were short of a number of regular players, but it made the encounter more interesting and competitive. Luckily it was a fine, dry day and the green was in good condition, which augered well for the match.
On rink two, Stewart King Thomas's four faced Brian Dowling's' quartet and it was a close encounter with a 13-10 advantage at tea to SKTs unit. By the 20th end, though, it was all-square at 20-20 and Pembroke Dock finally sealed it with one shot on the last.
Rink three had brother David King Thomas's rink facing Richard Hissey's lads. It was nip and tuck throughout, with Pembroke Dock 12-11 up at 11 ends, 16-16 at 18 ends and DKT's unit finally squeezing home 18-17.
Rink four saw Mal Evans's rink opposed by Richard Jones's four. Mal's rink went off like a rocket, being 23-4 up at the tea break, but after that Richard Jones's lads changed gear and won the next seven ends to be only four behind on the 19th end. But that was as close as they got as Mal's rink then scored a one and a two to win 26-19.
Rink five again saw a tight tussle between Malcolm Thomas's four and Brian Cale's unit, the latter being 10-9 up after 11 ends, with Malcolm's four 18-14 up on the 18th, but lost the last three ends to go down 21-18.
Rink scores (Pendine first) were as follows:
Colin Thomas, Dave Stewart, Mal Dix, Stewart King Thomas 20; Gerald Harris, Ray Shadwell, Tony Hall, Brian Dowling 21.
John Jones, Paul Leeds, Roger Gosnold, David King Thomas 18; Eric Dalzelle, Les Davies, Reg Thomas, Richard Hissey 17.
