Narberth 13pts. Bonymaen 13
Narberth had to pull out all the stops to grab a very late 13-13 draw at home to a strong Bonymaen team, sprinkled with Premiership players who looked a much better side than their league position might suggest.
The Otters remain second in the Championship table, 22 points behind runaway leaders Ebbw Valle, and three points ahead of Pontypool and Bargoed, who are joint third on 43 points.
From the outset it was clear that the lacklustre Otters would be up against it against a revitalised Maen team, who looked a far sharper outfit than the side that Narberth played at Parc Mawr to kick-off the season.
Pivotal Maen fly-half Richard Cunniffe gave his team the lead with a penalty after three minutes, but the Otters drew level with a drop-kick by fly-half Ianto Griffiths shortly before the interval, during the period that visiting prop Richard Murphy was sin-binned.
Ianto Griffiths put the Otters ahead with a penalty after 15 minutes of the second half, but the lead was short lived as Richard Cunniffe also kicked a penalty 10 minutes later.
When Maen fullback Stephen O'Connor scored a try from an overlap in the right corner, well converted from the touchline by Richard Cunniffe, it appeared that the Narberth cause was lost.
Ianto Griffiths missed out on a penalty kick, but late pressure by the Narberth pack on the Maen line resulted in a penalty try, which Griffiths converted to snatch a draw.
Commenting after the match, Narberth director of rugby, Jonathan Dodd, did not mince his words when he said: "Full credit to Bonymaen as they deserved a victory. We gained two points scratching a draw rather than losing two points.
"We did not play very well in heavy conditions and Bonymaen were the better side. With the exception of a handful of individual players, we were second best in most areas, particularly in the contact area."
The Health Centre Balcony Suite match sponsors, Molson Coors, selected Narberth's Stuart Worrall as man-of-the-match and there were also good performances by centre Richard Davies, who has been consistent throughout the season, and attacking fullback Jonathan Morgan.
The Folly Farm Otters Holt match sponsors were Folly Farm of Begelly and the match ball sponsors were former Narberth captain Peter Griffiths, of Alexander Partnership, Peter Spacey, Ken Morgan and the Narberth RFC Patrons.
Narberth fielded: Jonathan Morgan, James Russell (Tomi Jones), Steve Martin (C), Richard Davies, Nick Gale, Ianto Griffiths, Adrian Killa (Rhys Lane), Ollie Evans (Sean Lloyd), Dan Smith, Owen Jordan (Tom Slater), Adam Clark, Alex Jenkins, Lewis Wood, Stuart Worrall and Steffan Phillips.
