Pembroke Dock Mariners 63

Fishguard and Goodwick 97

The Mariners Brains Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start on Wednesday, June 13, at Fishguard (writes John Arman).

Uncertain weather combined with the noise of the adjoining fairground was not conducive to good bowls, but Fishguard made better of the situation.

Gert Gelderblom's rink fought back well from being 18-9 down at the 14th end to take the last end with two shots to win the game 20-19.

Gerard Thomas's rink never did lead and even when they held a good head it was taken away by some excellent weighted bowling by Fishguard's skip Tony Evans.

Graham Bann's foursome got off to a good start and led 10-8 at 11 ends. They were then outbowled by the Fishguard rink to lose 34-12.

Dave Halward and Co had the best of the evening but even they had to fight back after trailing 4-3 at the sixth end. However, they dug in and recovered to take the game 21-18.

Rink scores (Mariners first, Fishguard skips only):

Alan Yea, Bobby Taylor, Graham Roberts, Gert Gelderblom 20; M. Barringer 19.

Keith Church, Arthur Kilshaw, John Arman, Gerard Thomas 10; T. Evans 26.

Derek Scone, Archie Greaves, Tony Spicer, Graham Bann 12; M. Bedford 34;

Jerry Carroll, Karl Biershenk, Richard Caley, Dave Halward 21; D. Hughes 18.

MARINERS 110

PATER 57

Greatly improved weather and a superb green resulted in a glorious day's bowling on Sunday between these two Pembroke Dock teams. The final score greatly exagerrated the difference between the teams.

Before the game started, Pater captain Steve James called for a minute's silence for Pembroke Dock stalwart Jenny Hissey who passed away last week.

Gert Gelderblom's rink had to work hard to overcome the Pater foursome, but maintained a steady game to win 26-17.

On rink two, Dave Halward and Co had to work very hard to recover from trailing 20-12 at 14 ends to take the game 23-20

Graham Bann's rink continued their winning ways, leading almost all the way and taking the kitty yet again by winning 37-11.

With Graham Roberts standing in for Gerard Thomas on rink four, this Mariners rink managed to win 24-9. This was despite some excellent bowling by Pater veteran John Russell.

Rink scores (Mariners first) were as follows:

Norman Firman, Boyd Parry, Karl Biershenk, Gert Gelderblom 26; Alastair Benn, Peter Satts, Bruce Smith, Dave Gwynn 17.

Jerry Carroll, Arthur Kilshaw, Richard Caley, Dave Halward 23; Hayden James, Steve Walters, Don Brickle, Steve James 20.

Derek Skone, Archie Greaves, Tony Spicer, Graham Bann 37; Grenville Wicks, Charles Scourfield, John Rapley, Martin Hyde 11.

Keith Church, Alan Yea, John Arman, Graham Roberts 24; John Nevatte, Peter Wilson, John Russell, Steve John 9.
