Pembroke Cricket Club recently held its annual awards evening and dinner at the Coach House Hotel in Pembroke. The evening was well attended by players and guests, who enjoyed an excellent meal.

Guest speaker for the evening was a well-known cricket umpire, Mr. Phil Marsden. During his speech, he complimented the club on its upward progress over the last couple of years, and indicated that he sees great potential within the club for further progress.

Phil, over the years, has umpired at Pembroke on many occasions and complimented the ground staff, Jonathan Davies, Paul Frazer and Kevin Jenkins, on the high standard of the ground, also adding that the club has some of the best facilities in the county, and even an umpires changing room.

He concluded with a toast to the future success of Pembroke Cricket Club.

The club chairman, John Harries, responded and thanked Phil Marsden for the kind words and compliments he paid to the club. He also took the opportunity to thank all the sponsors for their continuing support which is vital for the future of the club; and Brenda and Don Lewis, who are invaluable to the organisation of the popular Friday car boot sale held at the ground.

It was also the opportunity to update the members present on the future building works in respect of the new roof covering which the club is about to undertake, which would enhance the existing facilities. As part of the local community and having a building with good resources and position, it has been made available so that other clubs and organisations can benefit from the facilities along with the cricket club.

On the night, the club celebrated the performances of the First and Second XIs, also the junior teams.

The first team was ably captained by Sean Powell, who motivated the players and moulded the team into a well-tuned unit. The previous season they had gained promotion from division three as champions, and this past season played their cricket in division two. The team was now playing in a higher standard of cricket and based on the performances throughout the season, the promotion was well justified.

From the start of the season the team was challenging for a promotion spot, and turned in excellent performances, both team wise and individually. It was only in the latter stages of the season that their challenge finally faded, when unfortunately the weather conditions did not assist.

The second team comprised a mixture of senior and junior players, which balanced the side nicely, with the senior players assisting and helping the junior players in the various aspects of the game, providing advice when necessary and encouragement to perform to a higher level.

The team enjoyed a successful season and were at one point close to the top spot, and finished the season in the top half of the division. All who played in the Second XI thoroughly enjoyed the season, competitively and socially.

Pembroke also run a successful junior section in three age categories, which is very demanding and involves a lot of hard work and commitment. The organisation of the juniors has been undertaken by Chris Thomas, who has freely given his time and effort for the future of the club. He was assisted by Sean Powell, Luke Butler, Jonathan Rogers and Paul White.

The main point of the evening was to celebrate the individual performances of the players and recognise their achievements. The awards for the evening were presented by the guest speaker, Phil Marsden, and one of the club's sponsors, Jayne Smith, with the following players receiving awards:

The cup for the highest total runs scored in the season was awarded to Rob Weston, who also won the cup for the highest score in an individual match.

The player who won the cup for the most wickets taken during the season was Sean Powell, with the best individual performance cup being presented to Dai Jones.

Not to be outdone, the fielders also competed for the most catches cup and this year it went to Phil Hay.

The last cup to be presented was the youth player of the year. This is awarded to the youth player who has shown the most promise and progress during the season. This year's winner was Jack Harries, who started the season in the second team and progressed to the first team, and maintained his place on merit, despite being only 16-years-old. He is one of the most promising junior members within the club.
