Mixed Greensome foursomes

What a great way to start Open Week - warm sunny conditions with a light breeze and an entry of 93 pairs. This Hi Tech Industrial Roofing sponsored event courtesy of Chris and Carol Beecher produced some excellent scores, with 10 couples recording scores of 40 points or more.

Results were: 1. Chris and Helen Hughes (45 points); 2. Lewis Hurlow and Georgina Ormond (44 points/Back 9); 3. Mervyn Tucker and Heather K. Morgan (44 points).

The visitor's prize went to John and Steph Overton from Bridgnorth with a score of 41 points.

Chapman Foursomes

Deemseal Installations thanks to John Clark have now sponsored this event of many years and we thank them for their continued support of Tenby Open Week.

This year, the event provided a lovely surprise. After 13 years of trying, the paring of Andrew Williams from Henley and Paul Evans from Sherfield Oaks finally triumphed in the Men's event, with a score of 45 points, comprehensively beating the Tenby pair of Gavin Field-Thomas and Roger Schooling who finished in second place on 42 points. In third place on 41 points were another Tenby pair of John Hancock and Paul Bradley. Andrew and Paul played a very steady round which also produced a 2 on the 12th and 17th holes.

In the top three of the ladies, only one Tenby player featured. Anita Davies, last year's Tenby Ladies captain, partnered Mavis Arding from Hennerton to a clear win over their rivals with a score of 42 points in second and third places were four ladies from Shanklin and Sandown. Kathryn Harding and Jenny Domoney were second with 38 points and Stephanie Hart and Fran Cole were third with 35 points thanks to a better back 6.

The two photographs show the winning pairings with the sponsor from Deemseal Installations, John Clark, and the club professional Rhys Harry.

Unlucky Brian!

Miserable weather conditions meant that only six cards were taken out for last week's Mid-Week Medal off the yellow boxes.

Of those, there was one no return, while leading the way among the five remaining players was Brian Diment, whose nett 69 was seven shots clear of his nearest rivals, Donald Callnon and Malcolm Harts.

Unfortunately for Brian, due to the lack of numbers taking part, it was decided that no medal should be awarded. As some sort of compensation, though, he pocketed a prize of £10, while second place Donald Callnon received £8 and third place Malcom Harts £5.

There were no twos, so the kitty will rollover until the next Mid-Week Medal on June 27.

The bag draw was won by John Ross, who collected £6, while the pro shop draw winner was Mike Brew, whose prize was a Tenby logo hat clip.

Seniors subdued as Glynhir grab the glory

It is always a pleasure to play the Glynhir Seniors. Our two clubs have been competing for so long that almost everyone recognises and remembers the opposing team members.

So it was on Wednesday, June 6, as 18 aspiring Tenby Seniors made the journey to Glynhir to try to repeat our victory when we last met in March.

The weather was capricious; waterproofs on - waterproofs off, sweaters off - sun cream on, and as usual at Glynhir, the fairways were soft and offered no run at all. Whatever the conditions, all the players enjoyed the match.

As the Duke of Wellington said after his victory at Waterloo: "It was a damned close run thing!" - And it was too, if Mike Fox had managed to sink a five-foot putt on the 18th, the match would have been halved!

Sadly, he shaved the hole and single handedly snatched defeat from the jaws of equity, Glynhir 5 and Tenby 4.

There ensued much banter and baiting at the very welcome match meal. Captain Jim was again hors-de-combat, and vice-captain Tony Morgan joined with Glynhir's captain Rod Sewter to announce the result, watch the Tenby lads capture 2 of the 3 raffle prizes, tell the mandatory joke and make their farewells.

A great day's golf with some old friends and acquaintances, not the result that we were seeking - but we are consoled by the fact that the aggregate score for the home and away matches is 13 to 6 in favour of Tenby.
