Pembroke Dock Quins 29 pts.
St. Davids 5
The Quins started the New Year with a fine bonus point win over fellow strugglers St. Davids.
The hosts were soon out of the blocks, with a surging run from number eight Barry Parsons after just eight minutes opening up an opportunity for scrum-half Nathan George to score near the corner. Parsons missed the conversion.
The Quins were well on top in the opening stages, with the scrum in particular giving them a great advantage.
Second row Mike Davis was having an outstanding opening to the the game and when he went on a fine 30-yard run on 23 minutes to set up a try for hooker Nathan Brace, which was converted by Parsons, the writing was firmly on the wall for the Saints.
Just before the break, Parsons, on another powerful run, touched down for the Quins' third try, which he converted himself, to send his side in 19-0 up at the break.
As the second half started, the Saints upped their game and put the Quins under pressure, but unfortunately for the visitors the Quins scored with their first attack of the half, with a fine try by right wing Ryan Neillson, after a superb pass by George set up the chance which sent the winger on a 30-yard run to the line. Parsons missed the conversion from the touchline.
With the try bonus point in the bag, it looked as if the Quins would run in a few more tries, but a succession of penalties against them, which mounted to at least 10, took the momentum away.
But the first chance the Quins had, they made it count with the best try of the match, with the ball going through at least six pairs of hands before Neillson touched down under the posts, although strangely Parsons missed the conversion.
The penalty count was still mounting against the Quins and it was not surprising when outside-half Jack Jones scored wide out for a consolation try, which went unconverted by right winger Craig Chandler, to end the scoring.
For the Quins, it was their first home game since November 1 and only their second fixture of any description as well, and with a few players returning after work commitments, a bonus point win was welcomed.
