Sam Ackermann was a Londoner who came to this area in the early 1960s. He was a founder member of the Friday evening mixed foursomes. After his death in 1983, the Sam Ackermann Trophy was first played for. It had to be in June nearest the longest day because it was over 18 holes, men off the white tees, and draw for partners.

Thirty-four people signed up for the event this year and thanks go to Irene Gilman for kindly going out to mark the card for the odd pair. The forecasters got the weather totally wrong (as usual), so instead of Friday evening being dry and blustery, it was wet, with initially a gale-force wind!

Anne Wilks has had her name on the Ackermann Trophy more times than any other lady, and with president Mervyn Tucker she did it again. In the conditions, their 33 points was very creditable.

In second place with 32 points were Gill John and Steve Maytum. (Gill quickly booked Steve for the next mixed trophy, so a successful partnership there).

Thirty-one points secured third place for Pam Cole and Rob Hall. This was a really good score off only 13 shots.

Finally, fourth place went to the last couple out, Gavin Field-Thomas and Barbara Williams with 30 points.

Thanks must go to Rhys Harry and the boys in the Pro Shop for their help with the cards and to the welcoming committee, led by Richard Reed, for the meeting and greeting. Thanks also to Michelle for her excellent buffet to welcome us in.

The atmosphere in the clubhouse was buzzing as many of our new members had come down to join in the social to get to know people. Hopefully new friendships were forged, as well as new playing partnerships.

Only one two was recorded, this being on the 17th by Diane Neale and Danny Owen.

The bag draw winners won back their entry fee and the lucky ones were Georgina Ormond, Bob Parsons, John Hayhoe, Sarah Waring, John Gilman, Anne Wilks and Mervyn Tucker.

Congratulations to the mixed pairs of Mervyn Tucker and Heather K. Morgan, Vicky Burks and Rob Hall, and Jim Moffat and Anita Davies for another success in the Ping Challenge at Derllys Court this week against Machynys. Good luck to them in the next round.

The next mixed trophy is the Usher Cup on Sunday, July 15, which is now available for booking on line. Then the next Friendly Foursomes will be at the end of the month on Friday, July 27.
