As the oldest golf club in Wales, it is our history that makes us stand out from the rest, and this particular trophy (our own silver claret jug!) was presented in 1980 by the daughter of Mr. Mathias Thomas senior. He owned the club in 1907, and both he and his son Byam, and his daughter Joanne, represented Wales on many occasions. Of course, being a Bank Holiday we expected rain, but it was not heavy and actually dried up from time to time. Eighteen pairs battled the course which is improving daily after its winter battering. The greens are ready to test our visitors in Open Week next month. Only one 'two' was recorded by Tim and Denise Edwards on the 17th. They had a super round of 77 (nett 66.5) to win the trophy. Second were Rebecca Naden and Paul Bradley with 93 (nett 75), third Roger Schooling and Maura Rimell with 94 (nett 77) and fourth were Jim Moffatt and Anne Wilks with 94 (nett 78). Many thanks to all those who stayed for the prize-giving. I must also thank John and Irene Gilman for coming in to do the cards. The Open Mixed is Sunday, June 1, and the sheets will be in the corridor, but please don't put your name there, speak to David T. Morgan as he has the master sheet. If you are available to fill in for any last minute drop-outs, please tell David. The club is still looking for helpers for the week so please if you are available sign up in the foyer. Remember a successful Open Week is good for us all. The next mixed silverware is the Sam Ackerman which is on the evening of Friday, June 27. This is a foursomes stableford played over 18 holes with a draw for partners. Sign-up on the computer (bookings opened yesterday, Thursday, May 29) - book early as places are limited to 18 couples. If oversubscribed, the latest entries will be placed on a reserve list. If you have never played in the mixed before do have a go. You don't have to have a partner, and these are definitely the most sociable games of golf we have. Finally, thanks to Matt and Gabriel for feeding and watering(!) us after the game. It was a great success.
