St. Clears went down to their first league defeat of the season as they suffered a disastrous dress rehearsal for this Friday's third division cup final.
They take on Pennar Robins' second team for that coveted title and travelled to Bush Camp to play the same opponents for the weekend's league fixture knowing that one point would guarantee them being crowned as champions.
It very nearly came too, as a final push for an equaliser saw many an effort go close, but not quite close enough for Craig Weston's men.
If the first half was anything to go by, then the home side, (boasting three first team regulars as there was no game for their flagship team) took control. They went into the break 2-0 up as St. Clears came out as though they were all suffering from jet lag.
Matters improved slightly after the break and when Sean Seymour-Davies grabbed an early goal to reduce the deficit, a comeback was on the cards.
No matter how hard they tried, it just didn't come as the home side, with a stiff breeze behind them, always had something in reserve and whatever the visitors threw at them, they could always throw back more.
A spectacular score saw them go 3-1 up before a fine header by Steve Thomas reduced the deficit once more. Their final chance for a share of the spoils came late on when they were awarded a direct free-kick, but it came to nothing and they will have to wait a few more games before they can finish the season as champions.
A usually up-beat Craig Weston wasn't happy with the result, but could see it coming.
"It was always going to happen, I suppose (losing a league game). We didn't play well really, we weren't our usual energetic selves and it showed."
A youthful Narberth team came out on top away at Haverfordwest County as they won 1-0. With five players under the age of 17 starting the game, expectations weren't that high prior to kick-off, but the Bluebirds produced a sterling team performance that saw them come out on top.
They had the lions' share of territory and possession throughout as a good passing game ran the home side ragged and their good work was rewarded when Morgan Preece unleashed a beauty from 25 yards after a flowing passing movement involving Marc Hughes and Ade Jones.
Although no further goals were forthcoming, Steve Jones said the result was nothing short of what they deserved as they were the better side.
"It was a very good win for us as we all performed well. We gave the young boys a chance and they responded in style. It was a great result."
There was further good news for the Bluebirds when it was announced that influential coach Peter Fearne has agreed to stay on for another season. The former Carmarthen Town boss will again be joined by Huw Davies, while former Bluebirds player Phil Jones makes a return to the club as another addition to the backroom staff.
Tenby atoned for their recent poor run of form by overwhelming bottom-placed Milford United.
Mike Lewis's men eased to a 6-1 win, with Billy Vaughan completing a hat-trick, Darryl Mansbridge a brace, while Joe Worley scored once.
Division two basement battlers Kilgetty suffered a humiliating 8-0 defeat against a team they recently beat, as Prendergast Villa won with ease. The visitors' cause wasn't helped when eight players went away for the weekend, which weakened both Kilgetty teams, as the seconds went down 8-1 at Pembroke Boro ,with Liam Fenge scoring their only goal.
Carew lost 2-0 at home to Milford Athletic, while Saundersfoot kept in the hunt for promotion with an epic 3-2 home win over top team St. Ishmaels. The visitors were unable to 'cope' with the home side as all three goals were scored by members of the same family, as brothers Nicky and Richard Cope scored the first two, before cousin Dan Cope added the winner with a well-taken penalty in the 82nd minute.
Manager Sam Coleman said it was a game where they should have put more past the away team.
"We should have scored more really. It was a good display by us, although we didn't take all of our chances. It's a relief to win against a side like Tish, but we still need another five points from three games to guarantee promotion and it's not going to be easy."
Narberth seconds finished off their season in style and are favourites to finish third following a 2-1 win over Pembroke Boro at Jesse Road. The result paled into insignificance, though,, as a visiting Boro player suffered a severe broken leg in the first half following an unfortunate challenge. So severe was the injury that an operation was carried out on Sunday and the player faces a week's stay in hospital in preparation for him to recover.
Apart from the hold-up for the injury, the game itself was a good one, with both teams intent on playing a wide, expansive game. The home side were the better side, though, and when Tony Evans scored to equalise, there was only one side in it.
An own goal followed to give Narberth the win, but manager Adrian Howells said it was no more than they deserved.
"We had a lot of chances, so many in fact that on another day Tony Evans would have had a hat-trick. It's been a great season for us though. We were bottom of the league at one stage, but the boys have developed enough for us to possibly finish third, unless Tenby seconds catch us on goal difference. I'm very proud of the team, they've played superbly."
It was a day of misery for Pendine, though, as their season to forget continues after a 12-0 defeat at Manorbier United.
Sam Reeve stole the show as he finished with five as Dave Blackwell, Nicky Webster and Dean Hamilton all scored twice. Neil Lane was the other man on the scoresheet.
Tenby seconds completed a good weekend for the club as they beat Broad Haven 3-2 at home. Sam Christopher scored twice for the home side, while Rob Whitfield grabbed the other.
Carew seconds won the derby clash against St. Florence 4-3. Matthew Phillips scored twice for the home side, before Tom Arthur and Alex Bailey ensured the win. St. Florence's goals were scored by Rhys Winter, Gavin Kersey and Jamie Roberts.
Not such a good day for Saundersfoot Sports' seconds, though, as they lost 4-1 against Pennar Robins' third team; Mike Cornick scoring their only goal.
Lawrenny seconds won 3-0 at home as they disposed of Fishguard Sports. Jon Beff, James Phillips and Mike Howe all scored for the home team as they secured their seventh win of the season.
Manorbier United seconds lost 4-1 at home to Hook as Mike Brown scored their only goal, while St. Clears' seconds did enough to win the semi-final of the division five cup as they beat Haverfordwest Cricket Club 2-0. A Simon Bancroft penalty put them ahead, before Kyle Lealand wrapped up the win, meaning that a potential cup double is on for the in-form West Carmarthenshire club.
