Wednesday, February 13, was guaranteed by the weathermen to be wet and windy, and they were right! An early morning call to St. Davids GC confirmed that the course was open and the conditions, "not too bad" (writes J.J.).

Nearly 50 per cent of those scheduled to play had second thoughts and cried off, sensible people! Ten stalwarts turned up at St. Davids to be greeted by the aroma of bacon cooking. Two local lady members were preparing the bacon rolls for us. With 18 rolls ordered, there was almost enough for two each, a welcome boost to combat the elements.

In keeping with the inclement conditions, a new set of appropriate nicknames have been used. First trio off was Keith Cormorant Leverton, Roger Razorbill Woodward and John Puffin James. Having fought their way through seven holes, they reached the clubhouse and unanimously decided to head for the hot showers instead of the eighth tee!

Soon to follow were the next three, Wyn Mallard Hopkins, Steve Shearwater Jones and Wynne Wader Richards. With scores of 1, 7 and 1 who could blame them for capitulating.

The final foursome quickly became a threesome, when Barry Eider Wood played the first and decided that he still does not like playing in the rain! That left Mark Albatross Wood, Dave Gannet Green and Kelvin Kittiwake Bowie to continue. Their game came to an end after the ninth as this saw them back at the clubhouse.

Arriving early at the Pelcomb Cross Inn, we were disappointed to find the doors locked. With the meal booked, it seemed that we could be stuck in the cars for ages. Fortunately, the landlord saw us and opened up, explaining that there was no early afternoon trade, so it was not worthwhile opening. However, he let us in and after a few drinks an excellent meal was greedily devoured.

It was agreed that prizes would be held over until the next outing, probably at Newport GC. Albatross and Gannet were given a token prize each for their 12 pts from nine holes, good scoring for the conditions. Maybe more will take the weatherman's warning seriously in future!
