Over 100 girls took to the crease recently for a schools cricket competition.

Pupils from nine schools from across the county entered teams in the Valero Primary Schools Girls Kwik Cricket Finals.

Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development service - the competition was hosted by Haverfordwest Cricket Club on May 23.

The young team from Fenton School in Haverfordwest were crowned Pembrokeshire champions, narrowly beating Tavernspite School on runs scored throughout the day.

Both teams will now represent Pembrokeshire in the South Wales Finals to be held at St Fagans Cricket Club on July 3, where they will compete against the best teams from across South Wales.

Designed to encourage participation in the sport among primary school pupils, Kwik cricket is a game suited for all abilities - boys and girls.

Players use an orange soft ball and plastic equipment and can play on any flat surface inside or out.

Matt Freeman, cricket development officer for Sport Pembrokeshire, said Kwik Cricket was a good way to introduce youngsters to the sport and was proving extremely popular.

"It was great to see so many girls attend the rescheduled competition and the standard of play was yet again very high," he said.

"Girls cricket in Pembrokeshire continues to go from strength to strength highlighted by last year's formation of the Under 11 Girls league, which has already seen many of our regional players progress to national honours."

Schools entering teams in the Pembrokeshire Finals were: Narberth, Tavernspite A and B, Mary Immaculate, Fenton Milford Junior, Hook, Broad Haven, Haverfordwest VC and Stepaside.
