Tenby Utd 40 pts Carmarthen Athletic 19

It was an ideal start to the Seasiders' home campaign in Division One West as they easily dealt with a strong and experienced Carmarthen Athletic side and a brace of tries from powerful in-form winger Mark Heywood helped the G D Harries, FBM Holidays, Andrew Price and Molson Coors sponsored outfit to a maximum haul of five league points and register their first win to add to last week's well-earned draw at Amman United. United were dominant throughout up front, with the pack providing quality possession for the dangerous back division to run the St. Brides Hotel sponsored ball at the Athletic. After a strong start from the home side, who looked to move the ball wide at every opporunity, the first points of the day came by way of an early Jonathan Rogers penalty, but was answered almost immediately by a well-worked Athletic try, scored by second row and captain Steve Morse and converted by fullback Jac Wilson. Tenby continued to spread the ball and it wasn't long before winger Heywood found himself one-on-one with a would-be defender and from 22 metres out it was inevitible what the outcome was going to be and after going straight over his opposite number like a steam roller, Heywood touched down for the unconverted score, giving his side the narrow lead of eight points to seven after 20 minutes of play. Although Carmarthen managed three further first half penatlies from the boot of Wilson, it was the Seasiders who kept the pressure on and scoreboard ticking over by way of a self-converted Jonathan Rogers try and a fine try by flanker Andrew Cooke, giving them a half-time lead of 20 points to 16. Early second half points were registered for Tenby when Rogers slotted a dropped goal through the uprights after some good defensive work from the visitors left little other scoring options. Two minutes later and after phase upon phase of good play, Tenby's talented number eight Patrick Roberts sidestepped the last Carmarthen defender to touch down in the corner and with Rogers landing the touchline conversion, the Seasiders' lead grew to 30-16. Carmarthen had a 10-minute spell of constant attacks on the Tenby try-line, but the well-versed defensive systems that the home team pride themselves on, kept the visitors out and after skipper Morse threw a blatant punch in front of the referee, there was little argument for the rather lenient yellow card that he was given. The man in the middle had a busy time during this period and, after handing out further yellow cards to Seasiders' scrum-half Will Crockford and second row Rob Weston, the next 10 minutes seemed an eternity for United as they were forced to defend relentless attcks from their visitors, none of which resulted in Athletic getting to the line. Insult was added to injury for the visitors when superb work from Tenby skipper Gareth Jones and flanker Jason Ronowitz turned the ball over and it went straight into the hands of Heywood, who went the length of the pitch, flattening any Carmarthen player that got in his way as he cantered in under the posts to score the try that Rogers converted. With the game out of reach now for any real comeback, Athletic had to settle for a consolation dropped goal from outside-half Dan Evans to bring the score to 37-19 and, with a Rogers penalty just before the final whistle, the home side ran out winners by 40 points to 19 and were happy with a good all-round performance.
