THREE board competitions played were played over three consecutive days at Tenby Golf Club recently and it was certainly a hot one, writes Brian Jones.
The Mixed Section kicked off proceedings with the rearranged Sam Ackerman Foursomes Trophy. Torrential rain had forced the original competition to be cancelled, but the rearranged date was also in doubt, this time because of the searing heat.
A decision was delayed until the last possible moment, but the seasoned campaigners decided to give it a go. Several pairs fell by the wayside, but two teams pulled well clear of the field.
Ann Collins and Brian Jones returned an excellent 40 points and looked to be home and hosed, only for Donna Kenney and Ian Duke to pip them by a single point.
The annual running of the RA Cup followed , another foursomes competition, this time for the men.
In recent years, the competition had been played during the week, but smaller fields led to it being moved to a Saturday, giving more members the opportunity to take part.
Three teams managed to beat their handicaps. Steve Allen and Dafydd Evans finished in third place, with Juan Cruz and Richard Ormond taking second.
However, the winners were John Morris and Ian Thomas, who produced an excellent score of 39 points.
The final competition of the weekend was the Usher Cup, another mixed foursomes event. Once again, the players were tested by the intense heat, with temperatures continuing to rise as the day went on. The course was full, the round was slow, and several players were visibly wilting as they crossed the finishing line.
Despite the challenging conditions, the scoring was very good, with four teams separating themselves from the rest of the field.
Di Dredge and Mick Seal returned 34 points, while Donna Kenney, who regularly appears on the rostrum and Martin Spurin finished third with 35 points. Second place went to Ros and Paul Jenkins, who recovered impressively from a poor start to finish with 38 points.

However, nobody could keep pace with Heather Morgan and Paul Northam. Their steady golf throughout the round earned them an excellent winning score of 40 points.
Thank you to everyone who played in such challenging conditions, and to Beth McMann and Linda Tordoff-Evans for setting up the competition and publishing the results so quickly.
Without the hard work of our volunteers, competitions such as these simply would not take place.
