TENBY Golf Club’s Ladies Section enjoyed this year’s captain’s awayday at Newport Links Golf Club, continuing a much-loved tradition that dates back almost 60 years.

The tradition began in 1967, when that year’s Lady Captain, Audrey Birt, organised the first Lady Captain’s outing with her friend Nancy Evans. Fittingly, the inaugural event was also held at Newport Links Golf Club.

Following Audrey’s early passing, her husband Charles continued to support the event by donating prizes each year. Today, Giles Birt proudly carries on the family tradition, something for which the Ladies Section remains sincerely grateful.

This year’s competition saw Sarah Mansbridge continue her impressive winning streak, taking first place with an excellent 38 points and adding another victory to a superb season.

Vice Captain Louise Hill finished second with 32 points on countback, after a strong and steady round, while Gill John also returned 32 points to take third place.

The Lady Captain’s Prize was awarded to Mel Smith in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the ladies section over the past two years, a richly deserved honour.

The ladies were treated to a glorious dry day, although the strong wind certainly added an extra challenge. Undeterred, everyone embraced the conditions and enjoyed the spectacular scenery for which Newport Links is so well known.

There was a warm and lively atmosphere throughout the day, with the friendship and camaraderie that make this annual outing such a special occasion very much in evidence.

Huge thanks went to Kay and the Cat Rock Café team for keeping everyone well fuelled, and to Newport Links Golf Club for the warm welcome and for presenting the course so beautifully.

The Lady Captain’s Away Day remains one of the most cherished dates in the Ladies Section calendar — bringing together history, friendship and competition, while continuing to recognise the long-standing generosity of the Birt family.
