On the recent Bank Holiday Monday, Tenby Golf Club hosted the annual Neil Rees Memorial, with the event for golfers who have played senior rugby for Tenby United RFC.

Neil tragically died in a car crash in 1987. He played both rugby and golf.

The conditions were awful. Indeed, a few entrants cried off –mainly backs rather than forwards! Not many competitors were able to complete their rounds.

There was a very heavy sea fog as well as torrential rain and some of the big lads were reminisant of the 1988 film ‘Gorillas in the Mist’!

Neil Rees Cup Playing offplus two Gavin Scotcher scored an excellent 29pts.

Matthew Evans had 32pts. Former forward and hard man Dead Hadley posted a fine 34pts.

However, this year’s Neil Rees Cup Champion is Chris Evans who scored a wonderful 37pts.

Chris played in the centre for Tenby United during the 1990s, arguably the club’s last ‘golden era’.

This year the age limit was dropped to 55 years old.

Chris Hughes, who has just returned to golf following a hip operation, claimed the glassware.

Novices Neil’s brother, Nicky Rees had the best score. He was a deserved winner for his persistency over the years.

Guests Dan Evans, who also scored well last year, had the highest score.

Best Endeavour Eddie Lewis, not a natural golfer, pipped his brother Stuart.

Due to the major redevelopment project, there is no Clubhouse at Tenby GC at present.

However, following the golf, the rugby boys had a fantastic fewhours in the Cabin reminiscing on old times etc.

Thanks go to Mike Evans for donating beer and sandwiches.
