Friday, February 26, was a busy day for the Chicken Trotters, the weather was warm-ish and sunny with not too much wind, and the turnout was very good with 17 Chickens competing in this the penultimate trot of the 2015/2016 season.
Apart from the thrill of the competition, there was a presentation after the game - but more about that later.
After having received lavish praise for his winning score in the last trot, David Lamb must have decided to rest on his laurels, because this week he slid down the rankings to win the Booby prize - but 30p is better than nothing and David was playing with a reduced handicap!
Fourth place was grabbed by Mel Hicks, whose failing trolley battery didn’t prevent him from scoring 29 points to secure a miserly 30p prize.
Mike Fox eased into third place, scoring 32 points and pocketing 60p, while the ‘on a roll’ Bart Youll was hot on the heels of the winner, scoring 35 points for a reward of just 90p.
The clue was in the headline - with a winning score of 36 points Neil Dickinson triumphed again, earning a less than magnificent £1.20 - but more importantly leaping into the lead in the race for the Booker Prize.
The photograph shows the four prize winners, Neil is holding a coveted Chicken Trotter winners certificate - I’m sure he already had one, but the temptation of easy money from Ebay is hard to resist!
Since today (Friday) will be devoted to the Danny Carew Putter, Norman Badham Cup and Booker Prize competitions, which are all played off one’s club handicap, any Trotter who is in the ‘Sin Bin’ after last Friday’s play will carry his Trotter handicap reduction over to next winter’s season.
Now, speaking of trophies, I’m sure that many of the members will remember Arthur Booker. Arthur was a teacher in Tenby and a very active member of the club. His name can be found on many of the competition record boards and in the Chicken Trotter ledgers.
Arthur sadly died in June 1998, but recently his son-in-law, Bob Hooper, who is married to Arthur’s daughter Gillian - found Arthur’s trusty old putter. He contacted Steve Cole, our secretary, and offered to have the putter mounted and engraved as a trophy for the Chicken Trotters. It is to be called The Booker Prize (not to be confused with its literary namesake) and will be awarded to the Chicken Trotter who has the most points from five cards over the season.
As you can see from the photograph, Bob, Gillian and Julie, Gillian’s sister, made the journey to Tenby to present the trophy to Steve - for which we are most grateful. Already the competition for this lovely new trophy is fierce; Neil Dickinson is currently in the lead - but with four or five Trotters in a position to topple him if they can manage a good score today. Can Neil be toppled? You will - of course - be the first to know, dear reader!
And finally, just a couple of Trotter factoids - to date 202 cards have been processed, 4,763 points have been scored (that’s an average of 23.5 per card) and between us we have managed to amass 574 ‘blobs’ - Oh the shame!
