Following relegation from Division 1 last year, Tenby recently played its first fixture of 2023 in Division 2 at home to Newport.

First out for Tenby were Jack Harries and Joseph Nand Lal who halved with J. Evans and J. Gethin.

Rhys Davies and Darren Thomas continued their wonderful Dyfed League form by hammering P. Thomas and D. Owen by 6 & 5.

Unfortunately Nick Thomas and Adam Thorne went down by 4 & 3 to S. Griffiths and B. Truslove.

Despite arriving late, Chris Thompson and his partner Gareth Rees managed a 2 up victory over D. Griffiths and R. Thomas.

New Tenby Captain Andy Cope and Neil Thomas narrowly defeated J. Price and B. Davies by 1 up.

Alan Webster and Mick Seal also won by the narrowest of margins against J. Floyd and J. Viner.

Morgan Thomas and Richard Noyce claimed a 2 up win over D. Rees and H. Nash.

In the final rubber, Paul Jenkins and Rob Hall went down to J. Davis and O. Griffiths by 3 & 2.

Consequently, Tenby won their opening match of the season by 5.5 games to 2.5.

The next game is at home to Glynhir B on Saturday, April 15.

Pictured are Darren Thomas and Rhys Davies, Tenby’s best players during the disappointing 2022 season, who won handsomely again last Saturday.

Brooks Cup mixed comp over Easter

This is one of the oldest trophies to be played for in the Mixed competitions at Tenby Golf Club, traditionally played on Easter Saturday.

This year was best entry ever, with 52 members taking part. The weather was fine with a cool breeze coming off the sea; a bit of a shock to those that braved the shorts today.

This year’s winners of the Brooks Cup were a couple who have supported many of the mixed over the years, Angela and Gareth Davies (Pic supplied)

That wind made it tricky for the big, high hitters, with balls being taken off course (sometimes literally!) This was also reflected in the lack of twos recorded, with only one, on the 17th by Linda Tordoff-Evans and Nigel Ayers. (Nice drive Linda, and good putt Nigel).

Five pairs won their entry fee back in the random bag draw - Adrian and Bev Palmer, Idwal and Sarah Waring, Jemma Nand Lal and David Morgan, Paul and Roz Jenkins and Steve and Holly Watkins.

Special mention for Julie Tordoff and Captain Mick Seal, Fair Ball and Allan Morton and Carol and Chris Beecher who all came in on 36 points, with Carol and Chris just being pipped into 5th place.

Fourth place went to Linda and Nigel on 38 points, third were Georgina Ormond and Grant Watkins beating them on the back 9, also with 38 points.

In second place were Angie Gottwaltz and Roger Schooling with two blobs on the back nine yet still scoring 42 so well done.

They are away players but managed a magnificent 43 points. A good result, as it is not the easiest of formats. Gareth was full of praise for the condition of the course, saying he had never seen it so good.

Thanks must go to the Pro Shop for their help with the competition, and to Linda for doing my Scottish friend’s job on the computer.

The next mixed competition is on Sunday, May 14 for the Mathias Thomas Cup. Hopefully we will have another high turnout and warmer weather!
