Lumberjack Rabbits
On Wednesday, the Tenby Rabbits met up with Warren Hacker, our links reporter, and went shopping, then had buttered scones for tea.
On Sunday, they met up again at Priskilly Forest Golf Club for their first Three Counties Summer League match, hoping to cut their opponents down to size in captain Paul Crawford’s baptism of fire (a baptism and a birthday so close together!). The Tenby contingent went mob-handed with a couple of ‘spares’ (captain Paul and Steve C) out at the end and they were eager to get their campaign off on the right footing.
In a picturesque setting, the ‘twice round’ course was a first-time experience for several Tenby players and it contained things they weren’t used to (trees! - although they didn’t see the Limping Roo Tree of Nigeria) and it would be hoped that they wouldn’t make the same mistake the second time round!
Leading the way were Wyndham Collins (he can chip into a bucket you know) and recently-retired Phil Carpenter against a couple of 14 handicappers and they found both circuits a challenge as they succumbed to a home victory.
Next away were Bill Beynon and John Stevenson and they managed to take an early lead, which they held onto into the early part of the second nine, but they couldn’t maintain it and fell just short to put the homesters two up.
The third group away was the pairing of Ian Jarvis and Chris Smith and the Saints had the Flo with them as they swept their challengers away with an impressive 5 and 3 win, with both playing their part (apparently).
The Northern Twins (Mark Edwards and Shaun Taverner) took to the course next (they’re from above the Lansker) and they fell behind early and, despite the other one joining in eventually, they couldn’t quite get back on level terms, so the score was 3-1.
The two generations of the Watkins family took to the tee next, with Grant showing father Steve how to do it as they got a grip on the game from the start and they closed out the game with a 5 and 3 success to pull one back for Tenby.
The last game involved Rees Davies and Adrian Palmer (who was playing against the home captain, an ex-St. Pierre golfing colleague) and it was the away pair who came out on top to leave the overall score tied at three-each.
The after-match meal went down well and the raffle prizes were evenly spread with the ‘Two Little Dickie Birds’ - one captain named Peter, the other named Paul - doing their speeches when it emerged Tenby would go back south with five points whilst the hosts would go home with four.
A good beginning and hopefully more points can be garnered from the trip the Tenby boys have to make to another nine-hole course next Sunday as they travel to Cwmrhydneuadd. Come on you Reds!
(Editor’s note - thanks to Mr. M. Python and his friends for the use of some of the words from one of their ditties).
